Maersk sink two ships under tow. How clumsy!
« on: December 23, 2016, 05:20:55 pm »

Albeit they were their own ships and being towed to a breakers yard..

https://www.offshoreenergytoday.com/two-maersk-offshore-vessels-sink-off-french-coast/

The talk on the shipping pages is 'how convenient' 'insurance' etc etc  %) Also the more knowledgeable were asking questions as to why they were being towed side by side rather than line astern. Both ships were unmanned and drained of all oils and fuels so no environmental risk.

there will be a big investigation into this , side by side tow might be acceptable in the middle of summer but not winter and NEVER in the Bay of Biscay that was always going to end up with both boats going to the bottom

Willing to bet they did this to save on having 2 tugs ( the 3rd tug that was the tow vessel is still heading straight to Turkey to the breakers yard.... ) , well that should backfire on them as I can't see the insurance paying up for this one even if they escape fines for an unsafe tow ( what the hell were the authorities thinking allowing them to sail like this anyway !!! )

Well....Companies lead and make decisions downwards from the top......

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%B8ren_Skou

Mr Soren Skou is the CEO of AP Moller-Maersk Group........his MBA [Master of Business Administration]  qualification is in Finance and Law <*< [not Shipping].......his subordinates qualifications are in Finance and Law  :o [not Shipping]

I wonder if any of the executive decision makers on the Board of AP Moller-Maersk Group have Marine experience?

Maritime incidents or disasters are the food for the Legal Fraternity.......the determination of this sinking of the two Maersk vessels will take years to unwind in Court......we may never know the answer that the Insurance claim  :police: will be honoured

We're assuming that the tow was side by side, but it's also possible that this photo shows them departing, before lengthening the tow and switching to tandem. More accurate and reliable info needed.

The photo above was as it left port beginning the tow. On a couple of the websites there are also photo's of the tow continuing like this as it was crossing the Bay of Biscay.
