Motor and shaft alignment
« on: January 06, 2017, 07:21:55 pm »

Hi
I've read a lot about the importantance of correct alignment between motor and prop shaft. But surely if I fit the the shaft onto the motor before I fit and position them into the hull all will be perfect. If this is not the case I can't see how to achieve anything better. Please advise.
Many thanks,
Glyn

The object of the exercise to ensure that everything is lined up dead straight...motor shaft level with prop shaft, both vertically and horizontally.

Do your utmost to achieve this...

Hi Rich,
That's what I'm saying I think! If I fit the prop shaft onto the motor shaft, and clamp them up tight, on the bench, then put it in the hull, fix the motor to its mount, having fed the prop shaft along the hull and out of the shaft exit hole, surely the assembly must be in the correct alignment.
I can't see any better/easier way of achieving this.
I will check, as you say, that it looks ok with a test run, before I glue the shaft onto the hull.
Cheers, Glyn

It sounds as if you are making a direct solid connection between motor and shaft rather than using some form of flexible coupling.
Is this correct? as most of the model boats I have seen use flexible couplings.

Some of the builds on here, such as master class, give alternate examples of shaft aligning with photos.

All good stuff. O0 O0

Yes your correct. I'm using universal joints.

Make yourself a MUFF (solid) coupling the same length as the flexible coupling that you intend to finally fit. Use the muff to fit the motor and shaft assembly into their final positions then remove the muff and fit your chosen final coupling
