12 or 14awg?
« on: January 07, 2017, 02:25:09 am »

Hi guys :)

ok im about to start making my power leads, I will be running 24 volt 44Ah (see diagram below).

The ring terminals i want to use are the ones like these as they will be easy to solder:

Problem im having is finding ones that are 6mm stud & 12awg cable size... I can find lots for 14awg, but for 12awg i aint having much luck.

So will it be safe to use 12awg leads for my wiring
, i will be linking the batterys up like the following (the blue lines indicate where i will be using connectors to make connecting/disconnecting easier!):

Cheers :)

Hiya Derek :)

i  need the hole size to be 6mm to fit battery terminals, 12awg wire is 3.5mm² i believe?

But i think ive found some!

After scouring the net for hours! ..i went back to ebay & found some which are 4mm[/size]² and 6mm stud, £2.50 posted for 20 which is pretty good value :)Also ordered a battery charger, i need another, batterys i have are 5 of these:

So bought this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12v-INTELLIGENT-GOLF-BATTERY-CHARGER-4-AMP-POWAKADDY-T-BAR-LED-DISPLAY-/252613210676?_trksid=p2349526.m2548.l4275
it has powakaddy connector which is what my batterys have, but will only use the powakaddy for charging, when i fit batterys in boat i disconnect the powakaddy :)

The power draw at any time will be totally unrelated to the capacity of the battery.  AH equates to gallons of fuel, not the rate at which the fuel is pumped.  A 44AH setup is probably capable of delivering several hundred amps BRIEFLY.  Your wiring should reflect likely usage and be protected by appropriate fuses.  The 14 awg will be plenty as long as the terminals fit the battery.

Thanks for the info :)

I will prob use the 12 awg I already have as i managed to find some ring terminals the correct size (on there way in post!) ..im going to solder them using silver solder method rather than crimp then heat shrink, I tested one out earlier and it seems a good strong joint even though the terminal ive used is far too big for the cable, so when I use the correct size ones that are in post, should be all good!

Hi Tizdaz ......... I'm curious, have I missed something? What is it you are building?
44Ah is a staggering amount of current to have available. At 1 amp that's 44 hours of usage. At 10 amps it's 4.4 hours.
You must be building something HUGE!
Make sure you have appropriate fuses because as Malcolm pointed out those batteries will be capable of delivering a massive amount of instantaneous current should something short out or blow. There will smoke and flames in an instant !!!!!

Haha .... now I understand. You could always sit in it !!!!!! Or maybe put wheels on it and use it as a pram !

I look forward to seeing the end result. Should one of us talk to Iain and tell him to organize a show with a really deep pool.

Happy new year Dave to you and the family.

Steve.
