What connector for battery.
« on: February 02, 2017, 03:05:22 pm »

I am having to do some wiring and I am looking at different types of connector.

On one model I have JST which have worked ok but are a bit fiddly with cold hands. But I can replace all if needed.

What alternatives are suitable for 6-12v battery packs?
Would SM be a better option?

Any suggestions welcomed.

Dean's are pretty foolproof.
Depends on the current draw
to make sure the connector is
Capable of running the current
without overheating.

Do you know what kind of connector Dean's use? I am pretty sure they won't be bespoke.

They look like JST, only black. Are they the same size I wonder.

I will be buying generics in China (where I live).

Dean's are the small red connectors
with a pair of flat pins at right angles
To each other.
Can't provide a link, but looking at eBay
Prices, they obviously are made in your
part of the world.

Below is a selection of connector used at our club. Its really down to personal preference and what is available where you are. I am sure you should get comments off other Mayhemers.

How about keeping just as they are and resin potting the back portion of the connector in a ring?

Going further, if one is glued to a bulkhead you have a push on fit.

Two or three rings of 3:1 glue-lined heat shrink insulation does the same job. It gives cable strain relief and sets rigid, and removable.

I think it depends on the current you are pulling. I like deans connectors, and I've standardized on most models, with just one or two very small models where I use the JST connectors.

My Dad can struggle with the deans connectors sometimes in the cold, as he gets a bit of arthritis in his hands, and they tend to require a fairly firm grip to separate. A bit of silicone grease on the terminals helps, and also the connectors with moulded in grips are easier top get a purchase on.

Tamiya or XT90 connectors are probably the easiest to separate. The latter will take any current, and are fairly inexpensive. Tamiya fine for modest current installs, but I wouldn't use them on anything with a very high load.

There is a thread on here where the "Tamiya" connectors are not favoured because of the lightness of the connection pins.

The others, Deans, Bullets, XT, as per the photo above, reply 4, were all suitable and recommended.

Am in process of changing my Tamiya's over as the pins pull out, but Microgyros has a practical hint worth following up O0 O0 :-)) :-))

Ah, silly me. In an earlier post I thought Deans refereed to the connectors used by Deans Marine  :embarrassed:  I didn't know it was a type of connector.

Thanks for all the input so far. :-))

Unfortunately, the Hobbyking Website is blocked in mainland China and they won't deliver here. I can only assume this is some action by the agents.

I like the idea of encasing the ends in resin, make grips.

I am also thinking of using the SM connectors (see pic). The wire is 22swg, which is heavier than I need, but as I will be buying in bulk it gives me more options.
Does anyone use these? What are they like?

Hi All
I changed all my ones to XT60 better than the Deans type.
Made adapter sections from the gold connectors on some of my Lipo batteries.
