Trumpeter 1:48 Scale VIIc (static)
« on: January 14, 2017, 07:53:36 am »

As a big fan of cutaway submarine models, I could not resist the temptation to get me the Trumpeter VIIc for Christmas. I'll post pictures of the build here, without allot of commenting. If you want to know more, just ask......

So far I build everything according to plan, only with slight modifications on the bunks, coloring and the air bottles, and I will slightly modify the torpedo tube hatches.

I've found a set of you tube videos showing the build of one of these.  They have actual war time film of U boats and opponents interspersed with the model build, he also has historical details. The first one is an introduction which will be followed by ten more showing the construction. As of yesterday he is up to part 4 of the construction with new videos every two weeks.

The introduction is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agsZzsl1s6g

I've been drooling over this kit for a while:-
For anyone who doesn't realise the size of this kit:-

Taking shape. The torpedo tubes are pretty much done. Still waiting for photo-etched details. I'll add some more details in the living area. The ceiling is now equipped with LEDs. The torpedos are glued into place and need some additional weathering.

O.K., started with some modifications to the kit. I fabricated a second cover out of styrene to mirror the one of the right. Turned out reasonably well. I also added some light rust effects on the steel floor.

I also started to modify the lower part of the torpedo room. Actually there the kit is missing the lower end of the pressure hull. Below the torpedo storage compartment were the torpedo balancing tank and some trim tanks. With a bit of styrene I added a section of the pressure hull and some internal bulkheads. The ribbing will be next.

Good progress Dr Schmidt......however one question......I am a little concerned with the length of the torpedo as shown and the orientation of the torpedo tube bank cell..

My only experience was with the OMC [one man control] hydraulic systems on Oberon Class submarines for our Royal Australian Navy which I realise is totally different to the VIIC Class [although I did see some torpedo loading and handling] .......Derek

Hi,

I doubt that the length is accurate. To my knowledge the front end of the tubes were closed by pressure tight hatches. So those are missing. Also the kit detailing of the outer torpedo hatches and the corresponding internal structure is poor. That will be allot of additional work.

You can actually grasp more of the detailing of the torpedo tubes by looking at this insane built of a 1:72 Revell VIIc

Test fitting. The interior of the bow will need allot of additional details.....

Additional details have already been added to the front of the pressure hull. The original ended in a steel-cast, dome-like pressure hull flor. 3D-Printing --> done.

Despite my initial intention to build the kit as is, I keep on adding details and modify the interior. I completed the segment of the lower pressure hull. The first segment got ribbing with styrene T-profiles. The front segment was a bit of a battle. Bending 1 mm styrene sheet, getting everything in shape in three dimension.....but now it looks O.K.. The front segment ill get ribbing, too.

Undecided what to o with the push rod for the bow planes. The model has placed it in the center line, but know there is a keel plate. The original plans do not help either...I guess I'll route it behind the keel.

Here some details of the front section of the pressure hull floor and the ribbing:

not sure if you are aware of this thread...  but some of your questions regarding the details not visible in the plans might be available here...  i know that this is not the same version u-boat as the trumpeter.. and the thread is enormous, but the research simon has put into this is astounding:

in addition to simon's thread, there is also tore's thread:

Impressive......but I can't see most of the pictures  {:-{

But actually I found a schematic....

The push rod IS off center. It's shifted to starboard...so my instincts were right.

yeah, on most of those posts, the imageshack pictures appear to have died...  but on the 99 page thread, stuff starts to show up around page 20...   and his last 10 pages or so start showing his 3d renderings

i think the post author did it on purpose... he is planning on releasing a book.

Torpedo tubes in the making. Basic paint is on. The gray was enhanced using a gray filter. Now working on accentuating the relief using washes of various shades. Then some wear and tear....

The addition to the pressure hull is done. I added the T-ribbing and the stuffing box for the feedthrough of the push rod for the bow planes. Then some fantasy plumbing to get everything a bit more realistic. BAsic paint is on.....

It is impressive how well thought out storage was, though I would  not want to sleep above all that explosive!

You are doing a great job Doctor.

Slow progress, because a plethora of details has to be taken care of......lots of accentauting, aging, weathering. But the lower two sections of the torpedo room are almost done:

The front bulkhead with the torpedo tubes is assembled. The hatches for the tubes lack detail. The hand wheel for the locking mechanism and the handle are only embossed. So I made handles from .5 mm diameter brass and added some photo-etched hand wheels. The embossed structures are sanded off and now I like it much better:

One hatch will be left open to show a loaded torpedo:
