I take it that is 6985 members who have posted since day one, many who are no longer members as such anymore?

So I'm guessing that the current membership is probably much less than that and hard to quantify?

No, most people register but never make a post. It is the same with all Forums. Only a very tiny fraction are ever active so the total membership number doesn't really mean very much at all!

True but  485,949 Posts in 35,652 Topics by 6,987 Members  is an impressive collective mind of Model Boat knowledge ... mostly!

Yup, they may not be posting, that is left to us minority of trumpet blowing egomaniacs, but they ARE reading. So make sure we stick to the useful, the interesting, the relevant, the helpful, the informed....and we can leave the comedy section to the failed stand ups, I shall stick to building boats :P

Colin is correct ...statistics' don't really mean a lot......I have nearly as many personal postings as we have members ..& what does that mean?  %)..ZILCH

Over the years, we have seen it all before,  a new member joins....sprouts a multitude of communications about various nautical matters, then when asked a simple question <*< stumbles and falls into the deep wilderness

But then again, some, like myself, join after a 30 year break in model boat building, and read many of the postings as a way of catching up on the modern way of doing things. I am very slowly building a model marine Ayton Cross tug but as yet do not feel confident to post a build log, but I,m learning rapidly thanks to you guys. Maybe my next one will be logged, we,ll see.

I seem to remember that we got up to a large number of members a few years ago, then Martin deleted accounts that had not been active in a long time. Later on some members came back and complained that their accounts could not be accessed, and so Mayhem decided not to do that again.
However, when Mayhem transferred to a new hosting company a couple of years back, a lot was lost in the transfer. This included some accounts.

There will always be some members who only read, and do not post, and (as pointed out) those accounts that just become inactive.

We have had members in the past who have not turned out to be not quiet what they seemed. Scammers, trolls, and others. But we don't need to look back.
Onward and upwards, to 7000, and beyond.

There seems to be a number of sweeping statements being made about new members!

But being given a new member myself I'd better shut up!  %)

I haven't posted much yet,
However I have spent time reading and learning. As someone said in a post, that some times a question is not required as a lot of information is already on this forum and i have found this to be true.
I just enjoy browsing and imbibing the knowledge these pages contain.

I do like to try to work out an answer before asking. but, i am a firm believer in the adage "there are no stupid questions" because if you don't know then, you don't know, and one simple wrong decision could prove very costly in either time or money.

I spent 33 years as a maintenance electrician in the paint shop of a vehicle manufacturer here in Birmingham including a four year apprenticeship. So i do have some experience when it comes to using tools,making/ fabricating things and trying to repair things. But, it is impossible to know everything or know the best, easiest way of doing things. I never cease to be amazed by some of the inginuity shown on this forum as there are many years worth of experience in these posts. if this was compiled into a book, now there's a thought. Ha ha. but there again sometimes one question will attract many different answers proving sometimes that there are no wrong or right answers, just different prefferd methods.

I totally support skierdive, most of the members get the info they need from the post articles, they are reading but not contributing, there choice

I think we all use the internet for different things. Sometimes we contribute, more often, on balance, we are looking for information. I spend a lot of time online researching info for holidays, currently working out an itinerary for a drive around Scotland with accommodation so I'm looking at all the reviews. In return I will put my own reviews online to help other people.

So basically, if you have something to contribute then fine, otherwise there is nothing wrong with using the net as an information resource. Nobody has to put information online, they do so for different reasons to share with others with no obligation.

I post on Mayhem when I want to, I like to help out if it's relevant but sometimes there are others who can do a better job so I don't bother.
