Couldn't have put it better myself Jim. Glee to a tee. Just looked at those films on YouTube and I'm grinning from ear to ear. Air Traffic Control totally absent to this day. Suspect a lot are using modern rocket motors and not jetex as such. I'm surprised though that the pellets still burn well after so many years in storage.  Oh happy days.
Jerry.

ICI factory "somewhere in Scotland" was probably Ardeer on the SW coast.

I think you would need to design a drag skeg to keep it on the water.
Even then, there would still be a great possibility that the model will catch air.
The few "cold power" rocket experiments we did were often scuttled by the high viscosity of water.

I did run a car for four years. Estes D engines...
There was actually a pretty heavy weight on the front wheel and suspension to
keep the nose down on the pavement. The ejection charge was channeled up and
over the engine to pop a drag chute back behind the vehicle after the run.

Hi I used to have a Jetex 50B and this was in a kit built all balsa boat about 6 inches loa.  It went very well and stayed in the water without problem.  I do not remember whose kit it was, (I did not like the bright yellow plastic boats) does anyone else remember it or know of it?  I think it must have been in the early 50's.

Hi Bluebird, well that was the one I was not so keen on!  I made up a balsa kit which I had forgotten about until this thread, but I also used to make the flying scale models from Skyleada and Keil Kraft and used the jetex in them as well.
Happy days!

Dave

Those have a very 'mild' burn compared to any of the Estes model rocket engines.

I used to have the usual small jetex motors and one large one which was about 3" long. I strapped it to the back of a mechano car and it would shoot down the side road like a rocket!

I seem to remember they were always difficult to light and invariably wouldn't when there was a crowd of people watching!

Great fun though!

Cheers

We used to tie a brick to a tin can , light the pellet slam the lid on and chuck it in the pond. Brilliant depth charge!

Best fun I had as a kid, strapped a Jetex to a hot wheels car and had track stretched out down the sidewalk. I managed to cram an extra half a pellet in and lit it. The car took off up in the air and exploded, ripping out the side of the motor can. As a 12 year old it was spectacular.

Did anyone else have the helicopter with two Jetex 50s to turn the rotor blades. Just occasionally both motors would ignite and it would fly - and usually ended up in a tree.

Heavens yes! What a PAIN it was trying to get both motors running at all, let alone both running at the same time!

My brother and I replaced our 50s with two Atoms 35s, and they always seemed to start easier for some reason, and still gave enough poke to fly the chopper.

Gerry Anderson TV shows from Thunderbirds used rocket motors produced by Brocks Fireworks, called by the crew "Thunderbirdflashes". These were also used by some models in Blakes 7.

Hi I was looking through a book about Adamcraft Kits and there was the Jetex boat I built way back in the 1950s.

The 'Jetex 50s were the small ones and there were 2 types and then the 100 and it went up.  They ran for an exciting 10 seconds or so got very hot so you had to wait to clean them out before you put in another pellet.

The original 50's were turned from bar stock and had cooling "Fins" turned around the body and a turned cap. Then value engineering took over and the bits on the 50B were pressings from soft Aluminium. Managed to blow a hole in the side of one body.

I think that's why they made the Atom 35s.

They had the same thickness walls as the pressed 50s but used a smaller pellet, so less pressure inside. In practice the Atom 35s seemed to be just as powerful as the 50s were.

Still have a 50C, this was steel pressings for the body and cap. Also have 5 of the original fuel pellets but no fuse so can't check if it would still work.

This thread is sooo sad. LOL Everyone replying to it is dating themselves.... I can not possibly believe that any self respecting modeler UNDER to age of 40 would have any idea of what is being discussed. {:-{ I certainly hope that this is not an indication of the direction of our hobby. :embarrassed:

I that case, I won't admit to having a Jetex 50 in my first working model airplane back in the 60s!

No, I was 79 on Boxing Day, and proud of having actually made it this far.  :-))

Does anybody else remember the thin wire that went down the centre of the fuse and sometimes partly blocked the jet hole after ignition.
I am impressed with the success that some  of  you appear to have had. I never eally bonded with Jetex.
