Plans plans plans.....
« on: February 05, 2017, 11:48:58 pm »

Feel free to move/amend/delete as you see fit  %) but.........

I've spent the last couple of weeks looking for my next project, I suppose more than anything I love restoration, taking something that's been unloved and forgotten and devoting a big chunk of time to make it live again, yes, I know I have problems !

Anyhow, nothing has turned up and I need to keep myself busy so I started looking for plans with a thought to possibly building from scratch. I was shocked at the lack of free plans on the net, I know there are a couple of sites with free plans and a few on Google images, but its pretty dismal when you think about it, there must be thousands of plans out there but only a handful worth looking at. I've looked at the "paid for" plans and even though most are fairly cheap (like me) I begrudge paying for something that was probably stolen in the first place or doesn't give enough information which seems to be the biggest complaint.

I'm sure the good people of this forum must have piles of never to be used again plans that could be passed on, I dont mean for anyone to break copyright rules or upset anyone, but people must have drawn their own plans, downloaded free plans which no longer exist etc.

Maybe I'm being naive but I dont think money should be made from passing on something that belongs to us all, it just seems so mean spirited, instead we should be helping and encouraging others (and offering your stash of plans).

I actually do have more... %)
Many of the lines that Ralph created on the German bulletin board were removed when he
was offered to participate in some kit projects, but when that deal fell through, the lines were
too much trouble to restore.  I archived a lot of the offshore AHTS/PSV that I liked. So I have
a fair number of them stashed in a folder. Brian60 used some stern lines to verify his work up of his Stril Offshore.

That's a brilliant list Umi   :-)) some nice boats there.

Only a handful of sailing ships though, which is what I was looking for (and should have said)  :((   Still, a lot of people will be grateful for that list I'm sure.

I'm going back to my original plan of restoring another "pond yacht", there's always a few at auction on salerooms.com but its a case of contacting the particular auction before the sale to make sure they will send it out and how much it's gonna cost !

(and should have said)

Yes you probably should have, might have saved Umi a bit of her willingly given time.

Few things on the internet are actually free, many people give their time and effort but it is not always appreciated and often the material is regarded as a 'right' by those who access it.

Colin..... I am really disappointed that you read something into my post that simply isn't there. When I made my original post it wasn't a "selfish" act, it was intended to help people here on the forum, and it already has. If you read my reply above you'll see that that I thanked Umi...... "That's a brilliant list Umi", and I went on to say, (as you so helpfully quoted), "and should have said", which was an apology, not a criticism.

You are an experienced long term member and really should read posts "fully" before you put people down.

I did read your posts very carefully before posting myself. The wording of your initial one did make me just a little uneasy although I accept you might not have meant it the way that I understood it. I also noted your apology to Umi but perhaps that would have not been necessary had you been a bit more specific in your initial query.

Speaking generally and without reference to your own post, there is of course a huge amount of model boating expertise on this forum which is freely given by our members. It is always a benefit to both sides and much time is saved if queries are as specific as possible and do not duplicate information which is already easily available from browsing relevant topic headings. This is also likely to produce a quick and specific answer to the query raised.

With regard to unused spare plans, yes, I like many others have a drawer full of physical plans which I may or may not use in the future. Should somebody be interested in a particular one then in most cases I would be more than happy to send it post free if the individual is serious about building the model. I don't feel particularly disposed to simply list them on line just in case somebody might be interested, nor would I go to the expense of digitising them, especially as most of mine are still on sale from commercial outlets and that would be a breach of copyright. Such plans don't 'belong to us all' as you suggest. The originals belong to the copyright holders and the copies belong to the person who has purchased them although they can of course dispose of them as they wish as long as it isn't on a commercial basis.

Hiya Flight

Are you not a member of Tynemouth Model Boat club - if you are - I am sure they have a stock of plans which are available to members and I think you may be able to borrow it if you find one you like - you could have it copied in North Shields for a small sum.

Thank you again Umi   :}   your Google images search seems to bring up tons more stuff than mine !   I was having problems a while back but thought it was fixed, I'll have to look into it again.
Hiya Bluebird, no I'm not a member yet, I'm struggling a bit with back problems just now but as soon as I'm able I'll get along there, I did manage it last week......on the wrong day...... but the ducks seemed pleased to see me !

Happy to help.

During my research on hydrofoils, I ran across the term Теоретический чертеж

Translated, it means "theoretical drawing. When plugged into google search, all kinds of line drawings pop up.
