1970s Graupner Adolf Bermpohl & Vegesack
« on: February 10, 2017, 05:55:12 pm »

So just joined and thought I would start with a cool project my father is working on.

He found an old Graupner boat in an antique shop with suitcase full of spares only a few years ago. Unfortunately it was in bad shape but I think paid only £5!

This year my dad started to restore and is making a fine job of it.
It will be retromod with new running gear as it is for using.
The whole boat has been dismantled and everything rubbed back and painted.
Unfortunately the Vegesack was not with it. But as my dad turned 60 this week I asked a German colleague to help track one down. It arrived a few weeks ago and my dad was over he moon. It to requires resto but it now means we also have to build the lift mechanism for recovery of the small boat.
This is going to be an interesting build and I will share pictures.

So far power setup will be 3x 600 motors with separate esc and separate battery. The outer motors to contra rotate and switch off on tight turns.
The props will all be same size which is not scale perfect but I think will suit the model well.

We also intend to get the radar to rotate and get leds fitted to improve the model.
Bringing this one back from the dead for sure.

He also doesn't know it yet but a Caldercraft Schaarhorn will be arriving soon along with a Billings  St Canute tug.
Although I want to tackle the tug myself as my first plank on frame build

Thanks for the offer, we were very lucky the boat came with all plans and even the left over pieces from the original plastic formings.
Have to say my dad is making a cracking job as the paint is looking superb for a model that has been given a rough life. Lots of reinforcement required on all plastic pieces and lots of model filla.
I am going to post pictures soon as I have started a specific model album on photobucket to keep track of progress.
Got an order to make so can get running gear in and setup to do a floatation test :)

I really will try and get new photos posted due to the dreaded photobucket. For that i can only apologise.

I also owe another apology as i have been quiet for some time, but now back to the boats. Last year didn't turn out quite so well, hey ho!

Anyway the reason for my post.
Has anyone got some really good photos and schematics for the aerial masts on the Adolf Bermpohl?
I am carefully as possible trying to scratchbuild a aerial mast, but it is hard arduous work and i am a complete novice at this sort of thing.
Hand bending hoops without any die or mandrel is difficult stuff and then getting all individual pieces soldered together is a right pain. The instructions only show some choice biews which are not that helpful to be fair.

I can see me finishing it and then scrapping it and doing another based on the learnings i am making as i go along.

I can see the soldering is going to need a lot of finessing. I will try as much as possible with the iron once it is complete and then smooth off with a file.
In my madness i am just holding the pieces with bare hands to solder in place, but it gets hot. I realise now that heatsinks and nice clamps would make the work alot easier.
I should explain i am just using normal standard solder(is that right??) and using gas welding rod for the material (is that right??)

Many thanks for any pointers

Hi Tim, do you have plans for the lift mechanism for hauling the Vegesack onboard?
I found a guy in Germany who makes them, but i rather fancy tackling this ourselves.
Many thanks
