A metre should work near to optimum Rich
Unless someone measures one and lets you know.

I guessed it was somewhere around a metre, Ned...I'll solder it up to a metre and do some range check before I let loose.

Rich,
Just measured an old Futaba 40 meg receiver and it is exactly 94cm.

Interesting thread on RC Groups . . .
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1078426-RX-aerial-length

A lot of length variations listed, especially for Futaba Rx's.  It does say length for each model is critical as "This as Futaba receivers have an input inductor that matches the original length of wire antenna, as listed below, to the respective receiver RF circuits".

See thread for details of lengths per receiver type.

From what I have read in the past, antenna length is somewhat important, but not critical. You can go into optimal length, optimal arrangement (straight vertical). Both my boats have the antenna horizontal running around inside the hull (far from straight) and work fine.
Unless you are going to extremes of range,(800m plus), where you could not really see the model, I doubt if it would affect most of us model boaters. The main exception I can think of is 2.4G that will not pass through water, so that sailing a boat in a good swell might need an above deck antenna.
