Joysway Orion mainsail luff rings
« on: February 22, 2017, 11:20:24 am »

I need some advice please

When I bought my Orion I found that 1 of the 3 luff rings was missing. I rang the supplier quoting the part number, who within 20 mins rang back to say that filmed had the part would send it to them that night and they would forward it to me. Yesterday as promised the pack arrived. I rang the supplier to say thank you for their customer service.

When  I tried to fit the new ring I found it a tight fit and then noticed it was much smaller than the two on the boat. Upon examination the pack was a different part number and marked dragon force.

Ripmax tell me that the original Orion luff ring is now discontinued and replaced by the parts sent. The very helpful gentleman said he would try to find an original part.

My question. The new luff ring holds the mainsail much closer to the mast than the other two, in fact it brushes/touches the mast. As a beginner I don't know if this is a problem? Should I replace the two original luff rings so all 3 are the same size? Haven,t found anyone with old stock so not sure what to about this or if it is even a problem.?

You can make a serviceable luff ring by tying a loop of rigging line
the same diameter as your original rings.
I normally let a little superglue wick into the cord which on drying
stiffens the cord.
You are not sailing a high performance racing yacht so the difference
will not be noticeable.
A ring that is much smaller will make the luff catch on the mast.

Thank you Ned, I will try that. Not sure I understand what joysway were thinking in discontinuing the part for one that's not big enough, unless the Orion is now discontinued......All a bit beyond me. Want to have the first sail, but combination of flu and gales makes it seem unlikely
