Blackening stainless steel

Hi I am looking to make some !:35 scale 3 rail handrail stanchions in 0.9 and 1.2mm stainless welding wire I am wondering if there is any method to get rid of the shiny finish either painting or by chemical dips.
Have a recommendation of black nail polish?

Hi rayna, the model railway boys use a chemical that blackens the rods etc, called Slaters black, its on ebay and i think most railway shops stock it

It depends on the grade of stainless steel. Low grade, you can silver braze and you might be able to chemically stain. The stainless steel wire I am used to had a high chrome content and nothing would touch it. Bit of a swine to work as well. nemesis
