'Spinning sail' rebooted to cut fuel and make ocean tankers greener
Invented a century ago, rotating columns fixed to ship’s deck interact with wind to provide forward thrust and could make 10% fuel saving

There was a recent article in Model Boats featuring the Magnus effect rotor on a yacht model. It did seem to work but I wondered if it might have been more effective with a rough surfaced rotor rather than a smooth one.

I remember the Fletner Rotoship, do not know what happened to it but it was similar. nemesis

I sailed on MV Ashington when she was fitted with a permanent sail. Renamed MFI. Then crude prices collapsed and idea was scrapped.

Considering the size and mass of the rotating column, my guess is that the best place to be is somewhere inland. Definitely not on a vessel liable to rock.
