The Falklands War
« on: March 21, 2017, 10:33:39 am »

Who remembers that?

Well last night in our bar I was talking about it with another expat and it turns out he was the cox'n on the Broadsword during the ill fated manouvre that saw the Coventry sink.

Then by some co-incidence later last night I was on a Hull facebook page where someone posted these photo's. The first is the stern trawler Junella, returning to her home port of Hull after serving during the falklands Campaign. The second is her sister ship the Cordella, showing how she would have looked before sailing down there. I think it shows well how the sea can ravage a ship in a relatively short time period...

Brian, what is the blacking on the Junella's bridge and wheelhouse.

Was it a PTFE anti icing coating similar to those pads used by Boston's and other companies after the triple losses of Ross Renown, St Romanus and Boston Cleveland of 1967.

They were ALL pretty rusty before they sailed south and the horrible yellow that Marrs group painted their boats made even the smallest amount of rust look far worse than it was ( and still does !! ) , Junella looks like they've shotblasted the bridge and left it painted gray , not rust marks on it just clean steel.

Junella ended her days burnt out after a fire on a beach in Uruguay , she had been fishing for Squid at the Falklands. Cordella wasn't her sister though the Cordella had 2 sisters the Farnella and Northella. Northella never returned to the fishing being kept on long term charter by the RN as a navigation training ship ( she was scrapped at Aalang in India about 10 years back ) , the Cordella went back fishing , was sold to New Zealand , taken back to Europe and sold to Lithuania and she sunk ( all hands saved ) off Greenland fishing for Shrimps , the Farnella is still around as a salvage ship , was called Odyssey Explorer and now "sold" and renamed Empire Persia

The RN shotblasted all 5 trawlers they had at the Falklands and repainted them , they also decided to strip down the engines/gearboxes as well..... lets just say the first trip back on the Farnella to the North Cape of Norway ended up on a rope being towed back to Britain to have the engine rebuilt again as someone didn't put it back together properly ooopppsss
