Wheeler Dealers
« on: March 24, 2017, 12:28:57 pm »

Fans of the programme will be disappointed to hear that Ed China is leaving the show for good reasons, and I respect him for his decisions. It seems the American company that bought out Attaboy productions do not want to spend the time and money on covering so much garage time so he feels he cannot restore the vehicles to the standard he has become noted for and that his credibility would suffer. To me the garage time was the best part of the show.

Ed tells you why on his Youtube page.

Also the chemistry between Mike Brewer and Ed is irreplaceable.

Mike is staying on, I don't know the new mechanic taking over.

I wish Ed well in any new venture.

Bye, bye to another decent program, I suppose these new producers will want something like all the other American rubbish and childish, car programmes.

I have to confess the writing was on the wall.  The move to America and they were starting to repeat themselves every 10 minutes like the American shows.  Give Edd China his own show!

Shame - I normally skim through the 'Mike' bits and watch the actual oily bits of their show.

I always hate the fake drama and stupid deadlines in these American programs.
The shows are getting pretty dreadful now - the only one I like is Fast & Loud - the humour seems guite genuine.
All the others are just too fake and too contrived and the 'mechanics' all have to have 'street'names. Yawn

I'd like to see a more in-depth program teaching all the skills needed to fix cars from welding to bodywork - and how to fix the common cock-ups.

I watched the youtube video last night - good to see a bloke stand by his principles. I guess that Mike will be emigrating to the U.S. to be closer to the Discovery Network {-)

Have you noticed that the labour times are never taken into account in the final "profit" figure? Ed spends many hours on some of these jobs (assuming he doesn't have a team of mechanics off-screen) and then Mike says " we can sell this for £xxxx" and flogs it to the first person to offer £2000 less!
Still love the show though....

I haven't had a telly for eight years now and frankly from what you are saying about it in general, I am still not sad I gave it up.

Hurrah for Radio 6. I remember documentries being so repetetive and wondering why tv companies think everyone should be treated as if they are seven. I know there are those out there who are seven, but not everyone is!

I was watching Game of Thrnes on DVD but that got daft, and Vikings which started out bloomin marvellous has slowed down somewhat. not enough battles. Too many bosoms  %)

The whole point is this is what you can do at home. Although Edds workshop has gone more & more upmarket since the early ones.

If you follow it on Pistonheads.com, lots of the cars are never sold or the 'buyer' is part of the team. The whole show is contrived and the haggling when he buys is fake - the price has been pre-agreed and the car has been inspected and gone over with a fine tooth comb so there are no surprises.
Mike couldn't haggle his way out of a wet paper bag.

Ed is not on his own either - he has assisstants and access to experts and all the special tooling needed from the dealers/manufacturers that he 'borrows from a mate'.

You can also see that much more money and hidden jobs have been done on the cars to get them fixed - even little things like 4 new tyres you can see in the reveal.

I know the show is totally fake but I still like watching the oily stuff come apart and get fixed.
One of my annoyances is the way they never properly clean or grease or paint anything before it's reassembled.

At the end of the day, it's a 'made for TV show' and the profit from the car is irrelevent pin-money considering the hundreds of thousands of profit per episode from Discovery Channel and the worldwide syndication money.

Kerrrr-ching!
They could burn the cars to the ground for fun if they wanted to.

I have to agree that the thing that made the show for me was Ed showing us exactly how to do each job, I have always maintained my own vehicles, and still do for most jobs - just a few of the more difficult ones get delegated to a garage nowadays, but in the past I thought nothing of dropping the sump off an engine and replacing the piston rings, nowadays I might think twice about an engine rebuild.

For Series 13 they started including the number of man hours when they sum up the cost.  It was always my pet peeve about WDs.  I know that they are usually working on 4 or 5 of the cars simultaneously.

The end of Wheeler Dealers was the 2nd series in the US it's gone down hill from there onwards, Edd is an amazing mechanic and is better off out of there if that's what the Americans what to do with it, Mike won't last long without Edd either, they worked so well together and I wouldn't be surprised if they did another show in the UK

that's a shame about ed leaving.  we currently get the wheeler dealers trading up series. it is rubbish. the best way to ruin any show is give it to America. gold rush is a classic. digger gets stuck. have to get it out before floods come. big drama. I was watching it thinking use the boom and bucket and drag it out which they did after a long time trying to screw it out on the tracks.

They give the hours it takes to do the work for the last two seasons. I actually said to Edd on farcebook they should list the man hours taken for the job because we the viewers didnt know if they had 4 other guys working on the car off camera. Edd said they dont give labour costs because the idea of the programme is it is as if the home mechanic (Edd)  has done the job, there is no labour to pay.

Not saying I was the only person who suggested to them they should list the hours spent but it would be cool if I was!

I think only a handful of cars are actually sold to the general public. The red ferrari they did was eventually bought by a 'young lad' who actually buys and sells ferrari's through a business. Lots of people who supposedly bought cars in the early series had sold them when Edd did the 'catch up' programme.

I'll never forget the time they did the BMW M3 vert with a goosed gearbox. Mike turned up with a fully working BMWreplacement 6 speed auto for £500! Then there was the Boxter that had a goosed auto box. Guy had not moved it for 2 years (but it was taxed and tested for mike's test drive). Had a slipping auto so the guy was happy to sell it for £1500 but sold it to Mike for 1200! He'd have got at least 2 grand in scrap for the car!

Sad loss Edd leaving and I fully understand his position. Ive watched every WD episode several times but Im not sure if I watch the new series now Edd's left.

I knew Mike many years ago when I was a car trader he has a used car site in South London and done well from it, he was also well into flying model helicopters for years and was always seen at the big model shows like Sandown. The brains behind all the mechanical work is actually Edd's assistant you sometimes see help him he's the garage owner not Edd. The whole program is made up as mentioned there's one episode with a Porsche where it has a faulty gearbox and edd changes the oil filter in the box and it's all working fine again 'really'..
Mikes new assstsant Ant Anstead should be good for the show http://wheelerdealers.discoveryuk.com/biography/ant-anstead/ he had a documentary last year where restored an Aston Martin he really know his stuff.

everyone queries this but it is all true. The car was on Boxanet as Mike says in the show. The owner came on asking advice & just wanted shot of it. Various people had "looked at it" & everyone pronounced it needed a new or rebuilt box. OPC price for the box is £6K rebuild is £2500. Mike bought it from there. And yes all it needed was a filter change, the Porsche box is very sensitive to fluid quality & level& is hard to check & top up. Mine was changed beyond all belief after having a fluid change & readaption. And that wa before the scheduled service which is 96K.
Yes the car would have broken for more, a 3.2S engine alone is worth £3-4K alone. Oh and it BOXSTER not Boxter, one of my pet gripes having owned one!

Hi all, interesting thread, I have watched a lot of the episodes but not so much lately.  I thought that it was based at a garage on the airfield near Godalming, which also looks a bit like the test track that Top Gear uses.  Am I wrong?  Happy to be corrected.
Very sorry Edd is going I also liked the oily bits.  The chemistry with him and Mike was good as well.

If production has gone to the US it will very soon become a soap with cars in there somewhere and fake drama everywhere.  Since I gave up on Sky, I'm not really bothered.
Different program, but the opening to "Chasing Classic Cars" always broke me up.  "Hi, I'm Wayne Carrini.  I chase classic cars."  My neighbour had a dog that would do that.  Any cars, really.  The fact that intentionally or not, he did a cracking impression of Tex Avery's Droopy Dog character, is neither here nor there.

"You can have a lot of fun in these cars and I'm sure it's going to do well at auction"
10 minutes later....
"Well that was very disappointing."
Wayne got his ass handed to him at every auction - normally wasting/spending or losing other people's money.
His business and reputation was built by his dad - I can only assume that his current servicing costs are extortionate to pay for Wayne's losses when 'selling' cars.

Ahh, Wheeler Dealers , the Mike & Ed show (AND Paul Brackley), I've often checked their 'rebuilds' on the DVLA website , not too many lasting long . . .
Mk 2 Escorts are my interest ,still having a kitcar I built in the mid '80's sourcing parts takes up most of my free time , I was yelling at the TV when Ed 'renovated' a MK1 escort ,some of the stuff he was refitting was clapped out (Paul must have been on holiday)
I find Car SOS to be more believable, Fuzz Townshend snaps bolts /studs & nuts regularly , which is what  happens in real life . . . a quick squirt of WD40 is not always the answer Ed .
Both shows have pantomime in them , the 'deal' at the beginning & the 'sale' at the end in Wheelers , & Tim Shaw's antics in SOS with the 'discount' stunt's etc . . .
The American shows are way over the top , Wayne  Carrini only deals with  top 1% people , ASTRONOMICAL prices on this show (and it's all for tax dodges)
Overhaulin' with Chip Foose  :o  yes you can 'rebuild a car' in 7 day's BUT the logistics of sourcing parts / panels takes months. . .
This speed fascination's spilled over into the marine world with 'we build ship's in 48 day's ' from the far east shipyards , absolute nonsense , you can ASSEMBLE a ship in that time from modular constructed units , the building of which takes many months . . .

Hello,

Driving through a small village nearby yesterday, there was  a grey car about 100 yards in front of me.
When suddenly the grey car swerved about violently, and came to a stop in a great shower of sparks !!.
I slammed the brakes on, there was quite a lot of smoke, when it cleared I was amazed at what I saw.

The rear wheel and suspension on the drivers side - - had fallen off !!!.
The car looked like it was trying to take off, front near side wheel was up in the air !.
I was so amazed at what had happened I never noticed what sort of car it was!!.

This happened in a 30 zone - - good job it was not on a motorway !!!!!!!!!.

the problem is, and unless you are into the classic car scene in this country, the MOT TEST and Certificate was abandoned on pre 1960 cars by the DOT  in 2012, and so, there are a lot of old "classics" on the road these days that shouldn't be.

the majority of classic car owners look after their cars and a good proportion of those have the ways, means and money to have their vehicles checked for fatigue and  wear and tear regularly.....but others don't, and sadly I believe that this lack of official mot is now on a rolling scheme as was the road fund license for vehicles over 25 years for some time.

you might find more wheels falling off more old cars in the future......lets just hope it's not a back wheel on a reliant robin.......it'd be like a crab on it's back...........helpless.  {-) {-) {-)

Hello,

I should have said, it was NOT an old or a Classic car, it was a modern streamlined one !.
The shock absorber, and the suspension arms were still attached to the wheel.
BUT, they were NOT attached to the Car !!!.
