Deans Marine Fletcher needs some TLC
« on: April 02, 2017, 06:45:21 pm »

After 19 years of service this model needs some parts renewing. The stern depth charge rails have just about had it so a call to John Haynes was needed. New brass etch rails ordered  started to solder together this afternoon  hope to finish them this week more picture to follow. Sorry about the step just noticed

The entire modeling hobby is changing very quickly with the advent of 3D printing. Many parts are already available on multiple scales to suite almost all needs. Many of these fittings and parts are, sadly, putting even photoetch to shame. The drawback is, of course, the cost, but if that consideration can be handled, then many of these fittings will significantly enhance our models. Shapeways is one source that I am familiar with and am reasonably satisfied with.
Without his being a blatant endorsement, the following links showcase some of the fittings and parts available.

Hi Jonathan I have to agree 3d printing is the way forward. But for a working model at 1/96 scale some items are very fragile.I do intend to use some 3d items on a future build.

Stan,
I agree with you completely. I think especially vulnerable parts parts such as the D/C racks benefits from a strong and less brittle material. Your choice of the Photo-etch  here is the best example. I suspect that in due course, we will start seeing printed parts included in kits asa opposed to cast or machined ones. Those days are off in the future until unit costs drop, but I suspect that we may see in our life times.

We are already there!
At Linkspan Models, nearly all the fittings in our kits are 3D printed items.  The only exceptions being larger, simpler items such as rudders which are resin cast.

Almost finished building the brass etch stern rails  when time allows will paint and fix to the model. Re 3d printing  this is the future without a doubt. But for working models at 1/96 scale some of them are not viable.

Brass etch parts now built but when checking the fantail the paint work is cracked and lifting a major problem. I will have remove deck fittings and rub down the affected area prime and repaint.

Stan,
Nice racks..
they add considerably to the clutter look of the stern.

HI  due to other work this repair  has taken back stage. Work started again rear deck rubbed down and filled and given one coat of thinned grey paint. The next job is to fit the rear racks more to follow.
