Swing Rig IOM
« on: April 22, 2017, 08:02:10 am »

Hi,

I was fortunate to find a IOM about to be dumped so i offered a few bob and now in renovation mode, from my early days of sailing it was the normal traditional sheeting arrangements but this appears to be a swing rig type with no stays and just a central hole in the deck.

Can anyone help with some ideas or links to good sites to help me get this up and running again.

Many thanks again.

As far as I am aware, the IOM class rules do not allow swing rigs. You sure it's an IOM boat?  Post some pics.

Agree with Chris re swing rigs. I am sure someone would have tried it by now if it were (besides your boat Rich, that is  %) )

Interesting what I thought was a IOM with a swing rig now appears to be something else it measures 1275mm with a mast > 2m high possibly a 10r? or something else as it appears to be a commercial grp hull with balsa grp covered deck....

Will try and post a sorry state picture after stripping it all back!

hi Rich,

Just checked my arithmetic and 1275mm equates to 50 inches which is the required hull length for a Marblehead. Of course a Marblehead could also be used as a 10 R with the correct sail area for that Class, so you are not out of the woods yet !

Main thing is to end up with a fine model that sails well, providing you are just fun sailing.

Hi,

Just looking for a thread for a sail winch set up on a swing rig, if anyone can point me in the right direction, been a few years and now my project is gutted and ready for a fresh coat of paint, need to turn my attention to the rc stuff.

I do recall using elastic etc to keep the tension on the winch line but things may have moved on?!

No Rich, the elastic loop to keep tension on the sheeting line still seems to be favourite ( Open to other suggestions ?)

Looking at your photo the two holes on the well bulkhead could be the in/out winch lines leading to a deck mounted pulley on the centre line aft and the elastic loop somewhere on deck with the single boom sheeting line attached at same place and lead through suitable leads to main boom. There is probably clues as to positions of var bits that were not visible in the pic.

Have fun !

Mike,

Thanks, there were no other visible fittings on the upperdeck at all, apart from the rudder linkages hence my thoughts on the swing ring.

Will keep at it and hopefully find the elusive R10R I am after.

Hi Rich,

Of course you could always get a plan and build one  O0 {-)

Years ago I built a 10r from plans that was about 7ft long hard chine so I bought an 8ft sheet of ply and cut out  the slab sides ! It was called the 'Spook' and sailed quite well, I used to sail it at the clubs (Three Rivers) Sunday sail with a fleet of Marlbleheads. It made for some hairy moments at the buoys when 7ft of hull tried to swing round sharpish without tangling the bow up with someone !

I think the main sheet would be fed through the
deck pipe coming out ahead of the stern cutout
and the two holes would be for the rudder control
rods from the servo.
A push/pull would be needed to operate the rudder
as there would be quite a large force on a marblehead rudder.
You would only have one sheet on a swing rig.

Hi Rich

Just been out with camera to take a couple of my swing Rig, an elderly Bantock 'No Secret' which I still sail occasionaly. As you can see there is one winch lead emerging aft and back underdeck forward. I didn't show the underdeck set up as I would never get the Fablon cover back without putting wrinkles in it ! It is a basic saddle accomodating the rudder servo and linkage on the centreline and the winch slightly off the CL. As the main boom is quite close to deck level I didn't bother with a sheet post. Ignore the loop of cord just next to the access hatch hole, it is a lifting stirrup to put the boat in and out of the water with the use of an 'A' type hook. As our lake has a concrete side with a foot or so drop the problem with a swing rig is if you pick it out of the water by the mast, you get the mast, followed by the sheeting line, followed by the hull !! not a good system ! My elderly knees forgo getting down and picking the hull up - not without serious risk of me doing a bellyflop that is   >:-o

Hi,

Well had to rip the deck off as it was awful to try and get a good surface [1/4" balsa and epoxy resin].

So now I'm left with what to do for a new deck? thin ply or any other thoughts appreciated bearing in mind I haven't put the winch etc in yet!
