HMS Adamant 1911
raflaunches:
Hi everyone
A new boat this time but from an old topic I started two years ago so as you can imagine researching her has been an ongoing task.
HMS Adamant was a submarine tender built in 1911 with one sister ship called Alecto. At the time early submarines couldn't house their crews for more than a few days or carry out repairs to themselves easily so they had tenders to act as floating messes and repair work shops.
The model will be built to 1/4" to 1ft (1:48) scale using my last ever plans purchased from the National Maritime Museum before the price went silly. Unusually for us (Steve & I) it will be a single prop vessel and the only mystery still remaining is where the 4" gun is located as mentioned in all the Janes books. All my current pictures and plans do not show a gun mounting but Janes insist that they were armed!
Don't worry the train ferry will be finished in due course when I return from Cyprus so it can be completed to honour Sandy.

Oh and a bit of modelling and history coming together in two models...
You may remember the colossal 1/48 scale HMS X-1 Dad built several years ago... she served in the Med as did Adamant so possibly at one point she may have served the biggest pre-WW2 British sub!
Just a thought but I have no proof currently! :-)

Hi,
Not sure if the attached (ahem) picture is clear enough (screen nicked) but just under the forward canopy is what appears to be a large calibre barrel.

Thanks Warspite
The problem isn't finding what looks like a gun it's trying to fit in with the plans! When I get back home in two weeks time I'll upload a picture of the plans showing the issue. I thought I spotted a gun behind the funnel similar to the Empire class tugs of WW2 but there isn't room.

Good luck with your build Nick. It will be good if you can prove that she tendered X1. If there were only two tenders in the Med, then it should be a 50% chance that she did.
