Hi Nick,

There's an article on Adamant in The Engineer mag. from 3/5/1912 and a pic which shows the shear legs at the stern and what could be a searchlight on a mini gun platform.
Sorry, I haven't checked the rest of the thread if this is already there but just havng a short play at lunch :-))

Many thanks David, Tony H :-))

Who wants to see what has driven Steve mad? Lots of tiny 3mm wide 1/64Ē strips of plywood cover strips! And he has gone into building tiny houses the size of monopoly versions! Well thatís what they look like! He has also added the anchor hawsers from brass tube with plywood surrounds. The break-water has been added too with their supporting brackets. Anyway enjoy.

Hi everyone

Masts and funnel up in position. The masts are standard wood dowel and the funnel is Perspex. Using a band saw the angles for the funnel were quickly achieved accurately.
The shipís boats are resin items from Quaycraft, all in 1/48 scale bought through Model Dockyard in Cornwall. There is a 20ft Motor Boat, a 27ft Whaler, and two 16ft Dinghies. The only one not available in this scale is the 30ft Cutter which we are going to have to make.
All deck light portholes have put into place but well over 100 portholes are needed for the hull!

Post Warwick show progress- portholes... thousands of Ďem! {-)
They are all 6mm internal diameter brass items from RB Fittings via Deanís Marine approximately 120 of them. Dad has had his sanity tested by rubbing down the ridge as we felt it was too much in this scale. He has made all but the 30ft cutter boats chocks- this is due to a non-modelled item from the Quaycraft range. So we are looking at alternative items.

These sanity stretching exercises seem to be rewarding Steve with a beautiful model. There's nothing like repetition to encourage the love of somewherelseness!!!

Lovely work Steve and Nick  :-)) Same for your Indie Nick.

Boat building MOJO has died off for the time being possibly caused by having too many projects on the go. I do want to get  back to them probably next year after some whittling of other projects. Thanks for asking  :-)

Hi everyone

Some progress pictures again. Coal scuttles have been made from lithoplate sheet. And a multitude of various types of vent are being constructed. The mushroom vents are wooden dowel and the large cowl vent is a white metal item from Mobile Marine Models. A door on each side has been cut from lithoplate sheets too. Little steps on the hull have been added from 0.25mm square wood.
And finally a minesweeping winch is being made for the quarter deck using images of HMS Snapdragon as a guide.

Lovely detailing - but I guess you know I love detail work on ships.  Is this a joint effort Steve & Nick, or are you recording Steve's work?  Either way she looks lovely   O0

Hi Bob and thanks  :-))
Apart from the minesweeping winch everything is Steveís own work, Iím his scribe!
I think I might be employed to paint everything and use my new toy I bought yesterday from Ally Pally- a sign writing tool perfect for waterlines.

Hi Nick,, I see your message about her mine sweep winch, looking at the pic above I should imagine it is more about operating that heavy lift derrick.

Good point, it would need to be fairly powerful to lug torpedoes and motive parts into and out of subs even small ww1 types.

Good point raised. I would guess that they did use it for the Derrick to winch torpedoes and the alike onto her but the original drawings call it a minesweeping winch. Itís more than powerful enough to do the job but I cannot see Adamant being an effective minesweeper!

I can understand the panic caused by the mining of several warships during the early part of the war in the Atlantic as well as the Dardanelles. I would have had as many sets of minesweeping gear fitted to ships as possible certainly until more proper minesweepers had been built even if some of the ships were ill suited.
But as Audacious and a number of pre dreadnoughts and armoured cruisers had been mined in the first year of the war, prevention is as good as a cure (to paraphrase the saying:O)

Nick, thinking out of the box , you work for the mob, like I did several years ago. When they ordered the Adamant, they probably went to naval stores first for appropriate articles. At the time these were being built the R N had minesweepers being built and cruisers  etc being fitted with sweeping gear as destroyers, so they drew out what was listed minesweeping winch for another purpose.

Very true Dodes, nothing changes!

Steve has been busy making the shipís boats davit supports using 1/12 scale hand rails and the mast rigging support eye rings from 1/24 scale hand rails. The davit supports will have a brass tube sit in them so when the davits are made they can be slid into place afterwards.

Another update  :-))

The two Derricks/booms and the bow sprit has been this weekís tasking by Dad. The detail of the booms will come tomorrow as my camera phone decided to not have any charge in it after these two photos! Tie down points for funnel and the masts have been secured in the deck and superstructure.
More tomorrow.

Some Admiral must have wanted his own steam yacht but the only way he was going to get it was to disguise it as a submarine tender! :}

The captains day cabin was very plush with a large leather settee, a ceramic sink and a teak table with wood boarding on the walls. Well, according to the shipís drawings!
