HMS Adamant 1911
« on: April 23, 2017, 04:34:26 am »

Hi everyone
A new boat this time but from an old topic I started two years ago so as you can imagine researching her has been an ongoing task.
HMS Adamant was a submarine tender built in 1911 with one sister ship called Alecto. At the time early submarines couldn't house their crews for more than a few days or carry out repairs to themselves easily so they had tenders to act as floating messes and repair work shops.
The model will be built to 1/4" to 1ft (1:48) scale using my last ever plans purchased from the National Maritime Museum before the price went silly. Unusually for us (Steve & I) it will be a single prop vessel and the only mystery still remaining is where the 4" gun is located as mentioned in all the Janes books. All my current pictures and plans do not show a gun mounting but Janes insist that they were armed!
Don't worry the train ferry will be finished in due course when I return from Cyprus so it can be completed to honour Sandy.

Oh and a bit of modelling and history coming together in two models...

You may remember the colossal 1/48 scale HMS X-1 Dad built several years ago... she served in the Med as did Adamant so possibly at one point she may have served the biggest pre-WW2 British sub!
Just a thought but I have no proof currently! :-)

Hi,

Not sure if the attached (ahem) picture is clear enough (screen nicked) but just under the forward canopy is what appears to be a large calibre barrel.

Thanks Warspite

The problem isn't finding what looks like a gun it's trying to fit in with the plans! When I get back home in two weeks time I'll upload a picture of the plans showing the issue. I thought I spotted a gun behind the funnel similar to the Empire class tugs of WW2 but there isn't room.

Good luck with your build Nick. It will be good if you can prove that she tendered X1. If there were only two tenders in the Med, then it should be a 50% chance that she did.

Did Steve sleep or do anything unrelated to HMS Adamant last week? She must be almost ready for planking by now.

Also, looking at the images closely, the frames look like they have been buit from segments rather than cut and peirced ply.

I am digging out the biscuits and settling in for another excellent build log chaps :-))

Hi Ian

I'm amazed to see the progress too, I've just spoken to home for my twice weekly report in with the family to say that I'm alive and the aircraft haven't eaten me, and he has just cut his first planks for the hull ready for them to be stuck in place this weekend. So watch this space... :o

He is obviously 'in the zone' as the cool kids say. I look forward to see it running at Wicksteed!!!

Hi Everyone

A rather late update to the build of Adamant for those who didn't see her at Mayhem at Wicksteed. Hull plating has almost been finished and the stern is receiving its solid blocks to be shaped into the counter-stern. Anyway enjoy! :-))

Steve and I were having a conflab about building her at Wicksteed saturday evening and his technique is pleasingly free and easy. No resins or fibreglass used.

That brass work around the prop shaft and rudder looks really neat.   :-))

And I doubt that it will be going anywhere if impacted. It looks good and solid.

A lovely job so far  :-)

Just had a report back from the home dockyard from the burnt-fingers-one!
He has just completed the brass rudder and trial fitted everything together, just needs the brass pins to lock the rudder to its pivot rod. Look forward to going home this weekend to see his progress. :-))

We've just been talking about the future features of the Adamant and since we still haven't got a purpose built model for night/evening sails we are going to fit yellow glowing LEDs in the hull and bridge, and of course the nav lights red and green, with mast lights.
We've just tried out potential batteries and foggy units to see what else we can fit into the narrow access area. ok2

Hi everyone, I'm back from Sardinia at last!

Realised that an update was needed of the build so far...

For those who couldn't get to Dean's Marine open weekend Steve has started all the major superstructures using 1/32" and 1/16" plywood, these include the bridge, funnel casing, boiler room intakes, and various hatches and skylights.
The mast bases are glued in place using a piece of brass tube and the same principle will be used for the anchor hausers. The aft searchlight band stand has been made and sits on the aft structure.

Steve has started to wire up the electrics for the motor and foggy unit routing it around the hull for maximum space for access.

The skylight roof sloping in one direction only is interesting. That assumes Steve isn't building a handed twin at the moment!

As regards armament, I don't think there is room on the foredeck for a gun. I was told that Janes could be a little innacurate at times, which is understandable doubly at a time when you didn't want your potential enemy to know what you were up to.

Splendid work Steve.

Hi Nick, been looking around on the net for any leads to this gun, came across the RN SUBs Barrow branch and they state she was unarmed. Though I must say the model is coming on great guns, I take it another museum piece in the offering.

Thanks for the picture, where did you find it, I have a smaller blurry version of the picture but you can see a lot more of the detail in your version.
