The positioning of the aft twin bollard  on the ships axis is not questioned, however the box shaped deck protrusion on the Port side so close severely limits the mooring rope alignment possibilities'..to shore or another vessel

So all Classes of RN vessels from this period when coaling or taking on water would have Sailors on watch at each of the mooring points to maintain the required rope tension relative to the vessels draft.......

Such was the importance of this, the actual Orders for rope adjustment would have been issued by a Senior Sailor or Chief Petty Officer and watched by a [Junior] Commissioned Officer

So the position of the box is questionable  %)..... Derek

Hi Derek

I can’t directly answer your question but what I can remember from the plan it calls that particular bollard a minesweeping bollard. The mooring bollards are yet to be fitted. The box is an unknown but it has a hand wheel on top according to the plan.

With ref to the bollard, like all bollards, the cordage secured to it would lead to a designated fairlead and not allowed to sweep round the deck, had one aft on a similar size vessel years ago and it only had 3 x fairleads one right aft amidships and one on each quarter right aft. Am very impressed with the model Nick, which museum will it go on display in. In some ways she reminds me of the old St Margarets and she had a barstardised steam crane engine as a after steam mooring winch.

HI everyone

A bit of delay in the next update due to me being delayed coming home >>:-(

Anyway... Steve has been busy in the last month and has been mast mad! He has started to make the boom on the main mast from brass tube, RB fittings, and some scratch-built pulleys. He has added the ladder rungs to the captain's day room structure so there is access to the compass platform, these are copper-coated steel wire, he had a few extra left over from making nine identical rungs! The forward flag staff is been made up from brass rod too. The nav light boards have been made up from 1/32" plywood and attached to the bridge wing supports.
But his party piece for this month has been the funnel steam vent pipe and steam whistles. This has 'popped' the look of the funnel and with the vents at the base of the funnel it looks quite stunning- its a shame to paint them!

She is going to the Dean's Marine Open Weekend if anyone would like to see her in the real wood!  :-))

Surprised at how long ago the last update was! :}

Well hello everyone

Steve has been busy once again to get Adamant presentable for Warwick and has temporarily fitted some rigiging so he can ensure the rope doesn’t interfere with the stanchion wires. The bridge compass and engine room telegraph have been fitted (ship’s wheel is on its way from Shapeways) and some paint has been added to a few features.

Hi everyone

A bit more progress and less time since the last update! {-)
We have started to make the anchor windlass using a mixture of 2mm plasticard, aluminium turned rod, plastic gears, brass rod, and brass turned rod. Not the easiest item to make from the drawings from the National Maritime Museum, we've still got the make the raised item at the rear of the windlass. For a first attempt we are quite happy with the result- just got to find some anchor chain to wrap around the winches.

Thanks for the kind comments, she appeared at Warwick without this windlass and the bow area looked bare without it! We thought it was time to get on with it.
We have discovered a few things about Adamant which now changes our era we're basing the model on- we are sticking with 1920's as we found two pictures on Shutterbox that showed that in 1932 she had her aft searchlight platform extended to starboard which meant moving the ladder/steps further aft- it would mean some serious re-modelling to represent her in 1932 so we are sticking with an earlier version.

I saw the model at Wicksteed and was impressed with the hull - it looks very fine as does the rest of the model. May I suggest you use minature turnbuckles when attaching the various stays as this adds considerably to the detail. For wire rigging either fishing line or beading line (jewellery) works well as you can get some very fine multi strand wire - you thred it through a small piece of tube, through the bottlescrew/turnbuckle and back on itself through the tube and crimp - it looks very neat and follows full size practice. The threading back through the tube allows for very fine adjustments.

Cheers

Hi Geoff

Many thanks for the kind comments, we managed to get her on the water and she sails beautifully too. The rigging has been removed as it was for modelling purposes and as a guide for the hand rails but it’s a catch 22 situation as we needed to fit turnbuckles (as you’ve suggested) but we didn’t know if they’d fit behind the stanchions so we had to fit the cord just to fit the stanchion wire to find out if it all fitted!!!
We’ve found some turnbuckles from RB Fittings which might be the right size but instead of the cord we’ll do as you’ve suggested with fishing line - we’ve got loads left over from Gnat’s steering refit so we will have a go this weekend at some wire rigging.

Well a bit of an update is due since it’s been a while!

Steve has started again on Adamant’s upper works and spent the last couple of months learning a few new swear words whilst making the funnel cap. He made a jig and carefully soldered the pieces all together. At least he didn’t pick it up and burn himself each time! {-)

The forward mast is stuck in place after some re-painting with some black paint on the lower half. Hand rail wire on upper deck is now in place ready for painting too.

Thanks Ian, I’m giving Steve a hand at the moment with the canvas screens. He likes burning himself when he solders brass- picks it up too early! O0  I’m sure your funnel caps will be excellent but I feel your pain- my Invincible needs three too!

Any way some updates:

Upper deck hand rails in position and painted, the searchlight platforms have been painted and canvas screens made from masking tape using the method by Dave Woolley on his Skirmisher build. We bought some turnbuckles from Ron Dean and we are having some practice goes before committing to something more permanent!

Hi Ian

Missed you  this weekend, hopefully when the Mayhem pictures are uploaded you’ll see the 5 Dreadnought type battleship/battlescruiser sailing together in formation.

Thanks for the compliments, the forward tub is for another searchlight of similar size to the stern item. We haven’t found one to match it yet.

We have fitted some canvas screens to the upper bridge and wings, I’ll upload some pictures of the update. Tried to have sail with her yesterday but a bit interference caused us to not risk it on the water. Further investigation required!

Hi everyone

An update on the build... almost finished! Just finishing the last bits of detail on the rigging, aerial spreaders are next. New 3D printed 20 inch searchlight from Shapeways in the forward tub. Anchor chain added, another 3D printed item. White ensign from flag man raised on the jack staff. Ladder made for the funnel. Ship’s boats being painted and final pieces being assembled. Just crew and davits left to do.
