Have a look at Project 16 here on the Mayhem forum for pictures... unfortunately she’s not a WW1 vessel this time but considering what she is it’s surprising she isn’t! :}

Hi everyone

A bit of an update with not too much more to go! The rigging is coming along nicely with some fittings being finally fitted which includes a water pump (available from Shapeways by Mark Hawkins of 3D Boats) and some davit detail being added. Another boom added to the bridge wing supports- no idea what it's for but we can see it on the pictures! And finally, the ladder which sits on the funnel platform has been attached permamantly.

As previously mentioned in my last post the final details are being added as we speak. A lot of swearing at the aerial spreaders- these are the latest product by Mark Hawkins (3D Boats) of Shapeways with 0.2mm holes to push your chosen rigging material through!
A visit to Haydock on Saturday to the Orion Models stand found some 1/48 scale stag horn tie down points for the ships boats davits.
I’m currently painting some figures for the model- does anyone know what colour Royal Navy ratings boiler suits were in the 1920s?

Hi Nick.  I continue to follow your lovely build of HMS Adamant   :-))

You might be interested to know that a colleague at Black Park MBC is currently scratch building the HMS Adamant submarine tender of 1944.  He served on her during her later years.  The ship was finally broken up in September 1970.  A highly unusual layout with four twin 4.5 inch turrets almost at the ends, and funnels set well aft.
She also had 16 two pounders in quad mounts, 8 20mm singles and 8 0.5 inch AA in quads.  She had accommodation and workshops for nine submarines.
She carried in store 117  21 inch torpedo's

It’s amazing how some crew adds a sense of scale to a model. These are Mountfleet Models 1/48 scale Navy figures which I’ve painted up in RN colours hopefully recreating the 1920s style uniform.
Enjoy

Hi Bob

That’s brilliant- glad Adamant II is getting built, a much bigger vessel obviously- I’m guessing he’s building it in 1/96?

Not sure Nick.  If he brings it to our Regatta on Sunday I will get some more info, and photos.
Still a lot to do on her, ie planking; stanchions; secondary armaments and other detail.

What struck me was the ships name, and I thought of you.

I know what you mean! We were going to have some fun with the figures when we first came up with the idea of building Adamant- A figure of Adam Ant and a figure of Adam Adamant we’re going to appear but we thought better of it! {-)

Look forward to some pictures if he brings it :-))

Wow, she looks fantastic on the water Nick and that third photo, being in shadow, is evocative of times gone by. (or should that be in silhouette)
Thanks for the update  :-))

She’s a joy to sail too which makes photographing her more easier. The last picture were from our recent evening sail and I was experimenting with different settings to see what I could accomplish.
Glad you like her too. :-))

Well it’s been a while since I added anything to this build log but after employing a spider to finish off the aerial spreaders for the radio wires I just had to show the effort gone in to it- well a lot of swearing! %%
Some final pictures of the build, she is going with HMS X-1 this Sunday for a photo shoot for my latest article for Model Boats magazine.

I think the spider gave up after these pictures were taken- apparently not being paid enough for the work carried out! {-)

Hopefully see you at Wicksteed later on, fingers crossed it will be soon  :-))

When it comes to aerial spreaders I typically use 1/96 scale photo etched brass stanchion. Pin four of them in a cross and spot solder the bases together. There is enough material to then drill a very small hole through the center. I then use "invisible thread" from a sewing shop as this is single mono filament and almost invisible so it creates a very fine effect and it also has just a little elasticity. I run the five threads through a small brass tube at the end and when all tensioned correctly superglue together. I select the center thread as the joining one and cur the others off. It seems to work quote well and at a distance is all almost invisible.

I make them on a jig as trying to do this on a model is very problematical! I find it a very trying exercise and you have to be in the self flagellation mood to do it!

Very nice work and she looks great on the water.

Cheers

Hi Geoff

I’ll remember that technique for the 1/96 scale fleet as I have a few to make up for the them.
I must admit that I made a set last year before lockdown and it was so awful actually making them I gave up but seeing the complete one side taunting me for a year I decided enough was enough and I needed to do it once and for all!
Hopefully the weather will remain okay for the Sunday so we can get some good shots of Adamant and X-1 together- it’ll look odd as it’s usually the tender that’s bigger than the sub!

Got the pictures today I was after- despite that this morning was supposed to be wet and miserable it turned into a nice morning of sailing. This are just two examples I’ve photographed- the rest are being submitted to Model Boats magazine for my upcoming article on Adamant and her charge X-1.
Enjoy.

She would have been one of Adamant or Alecto’s brood of subs from WW1. That’s good news that she’s been given protection.

Yes that was so interesting and pleasing to read. I do hope that she can be raised and preserved like the Holland boat, as while it would become a burden to keep an example of every huge item, she does at least bridge the story between earlier defensive boats and the famous E class offensive boats.

The jump in technology from the Holland boat to the D class would also be informative in a display setting.

Back to model examples...... Those are gorgeous models Nick. I like the turreted weapons on that sub.
