Building the Rumania from an Empire Ivy Hull.
« on: June 01, 2017, 01:31:28 PM »

I was asked if I could build a model of the Rumania ex Empire Susan from the hull of an old empire Ivy kit.
After some deliberation and a few tots of rum I thought yes this is possible, but the fibre glass hull will need some radical surgery first as the Ivy had a flush deck and the Rumania had a raised forward deck.
So first things first, the surgery I decided to cut the bulwarks and rubbing  band off completely and reduce the sheer of the hull.

The next task was to fit a good strong set of deck bearers and stringers to strengthen the hull, after which the hull was built up to give the raised foredeck,
The after deck was then cut out and fitted as well as the rest bulkhead of the raised focsle.

After fairing up the forward frames the fore deck was cut out and fitted ,the after bulwarks and knees were also fitted in place and a start made on the bridge structure.

That's some lovely work bring modelled. Was the wooden deck from the original kit or is it one you've made yourself?

Hi Nick , it is all new woodwork, beams and decks, for the deck beams I slice up old bed slats lengthways ,and then cut them to the length required, this gives a nice camber to the decks.

I agree with you about the older tugs having more character George, as you know i have built a few of the tugs that used to work on the Tyne, really enjoyed building them I think the most challenging one that i built was the Cragsider. I think i would have kept her if i had built her at 1/32nd instead of 1/24th she was a monster  {-)

I know what you mean I have now built two of the Hendon at 1/24th ,not too bad if the battery is used as most of the ballast and the rest is made removeable .
