Empire or Assurance
« on: June 03, 2017, 03:37:18 pm »

Hi all,
Looking to the winter time here and fancy building either Mountfleets Empire tug or Assurance form Model Slipway.
Having not built any models from either company I would welcome any feedback on quality etc.etc.

Many thanks Dale.

Hi Dale

I can only comment on the Assurance as I haven't built the other one but the Assurance is my second ship from the Model Slipway and you can't go wrong with them, the kit comes with all the parts required including a glassfibre hull, styrene for the decks, white metal fittings and brass etch sheet. The instructions are clear and precise listing all the tools required, modelling hints and tips and the all important stage by stage construction of the model, you also get two massive plans to reference from.
I'm not far off completing my model which has turned out very nicely and has been a pleasure to build. One thing to note about Model Slipway is the perfect after sales service and advice given if you're not sure or stuck on a stage of the build.

Not had any dealings with these kits, my only input is there where more of the Assurance group which was a successful class and used by many MoD departments. Where as their empire class although appears a well made kit, there was only a small limited number of this sub group, none of which where used by the MoD. My choice would be the Assurance kit it looks better on the water and you have more choice in finishing it.

I'm building the Assurance at the minute, A very nice GRP hull, the white metal fittings are clean and free from flash, and the etch sheet very crisp and clean, another great kit from model slipway :-))

If you are thinking of the empire Ivy kit, go for the assurance class any day, the Ivy hull has too much sheer fore and aft,but the assurance class kit is first class.
Picture of my assurance class and a bustler class that I have built in yard craft colours.

Hello Daleb yes the mountfleet empire Ivy, I have just used the hull of one to make the ex Empire Susan /Rumania.
You can see how much sheer is on the hull the real one wasn't that banana like

Hi Tugmad, is that the Cyclone finished in R.M.A.S. colours. She was given to my old outfit to prove we could man and run an ocean going tug, before the Ocean Tug Group was amalgamated into the R.M.A.S. Again a real nice pair, I have for some time fancied getting hold of a popular model and repaint her as she spent 99% of her life as , the Perseverance. remember seeing the Perseverance as a small child pulling one of the last six inch cruisers out of the lock gates at Chatham for the last time, a truly memorable memory.
