LA Fireboat 2 (patience its gonna take a while)
« on: August 26, 2007, 10:23:17 pm »

OK I have today started on construction of a scale LA fireboat 2 .
The model should come out at about 54" and is IIRC 1:25  scale.
I have got plans from various sources on line and a set from a member on here UMI  O0

With both of these I am going to make a F/G hull with ply braces from the plans Umi supplied. I have never made anything out of F/G in my life so its going to be a huge learning circle .
Anyways enough , on with the build ........
First pic is one of the real one !
second is the template on the foam sheet
third is the waste I have to get rid of somehow (blumming stuff don't burn !)
and finally the stack   glued together awaiting carving/sanding to shape  O0
More as it happens ......

Have fun, wear a mask when sanding that stuff, its evil. also seems to have a charge as it sticks to everything.
and as you are now a headmaster, prepare for as hard a time as Martin is getting in his build.
first thought, as you had plans, assuming you had frames, couldnt you have cut the foam closer to the shape, saving youself a bit of sanding/'orrible blue dust.
too late now but wat the ecck.
have fun, keep the hoover handy.

I had an opportunity to watch this with all fire nozzles functioning - looks great. There may be other photos at the Foss Cup page in RC Groups. There were a few of dueling nozzles as well.

I think he means the American GUY though, Toesup.

Yes, Mine is on going, still working the pumps...
And have yet to find one that will match mine in its size and pumping volume...

However, I think the admin may be reffering to John VanderHeiden's large scale build.
I sent him plans for the main Fire monitors, and we corresponded for a bit over e-mail, but his website
never showed any progress after 2004....  :-\

Oh, and my frame drawings were worked up and hand drawn, off of photos from the construction, they
are not from the actual plans. There are no copyright violation on my part for sharing those.... ;)

Hi Umi,
Yes that's the one I was thinking of, thanks for the correction.

Is your build on the internet somewhere Umi?

Martin

Well I am now stuck  :-\
I glued the styrofoam together yesterday with No Nails as it seems to stick every other thing solid .
Hmmmm over 24 hours later it still hasnt stuck at all . I think this is down to the fact that it needs to air dry to some extent and being styrofoam it aint geting any  :'(

So if it still hasnt gone off tomorrow I will have to clean the sheets off and come up with something else to try .
There is no rush though as i wont be picking up the F/G and resin until the weekend from Fibretech at an airshow at Much Marcle .

So any suggestions on a suitable glue to stick styrofoam ? I have looked at one made by Uhu por Which seems to do the job but ideally I would like something off the shelf from a B&Q or the like .

Hi Shane
I've never built a plug with foam but the adhesive B & Q sell for sticking foam coving round the edge of the ceiling should work.
You can also "carve" it with an electric carving knife (just don't let her catch you)  ;)

beleive white PVA glue will do the trick. worked for me.
also if you have a gander at subpirates there are quite threads on using foam. also somewhere on this site is instuctions on building a hot knife, or was it in one of the mags? see if i can find it later.
