wiring two ESC to three motors
« on: June 16, 2017, 12:35:19 PM »

I wish to wire three drive motors to two ESC.  One ESC has the ability to take two motors with cooling fan.  This would be wired to both outer drive motors.  The centre motor would be wired up to the same type of ESC but is for a single motor.  I have an Action mixer (p40) which takes three motors and the rudder.  This has a set connection for three ESC and rudder.  As I am using a dual ESC and a single ESC would it be better to wire the three motors together and use just one side of the ESC dual unit.

It was pointed out that if I was going to use the P40 mixer it would be better to wire the port and starboard motors in the  following way.

Each of these motors should be wired one to each of the two ESC.  This would allow for each motor to be controlled by the mixer when rudder operations come into play.  The centre motor should be wired to the ESC which can take two motors.   By having one ESC controlling two motors through the mixer you will get was is known as tank steering.

After much thought I am thinking of wiring the ESC with two connections to the outer motors.  The centre motor will be wired through the single ESC.  As I have a 6 channel transmitter connected to a four channel set Iwill use the speed control for the outer motors on the left stick up and down and the rudder on the same stick left to right.  The centre will be on the right stick up and down, leaving the left to right for a lift operation or lighting.  No mixer.

This dual ESC - is it a single card with two separate ESCs on it?  By that I mean two signal inputs and two motor outputs that respond separately.  If it is, then you are effectively using three ESCs for the three motors.

Here is the link for what I got.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320A-High-Voltage-ESC-Brushed-Speed-Controller-For-540-Dual-Motor-Single-Motor-/252691100748
Looking at the pictures in the link, it only has one input plug to control the two outputs. so both outputs will be the same.  Not really a useful bit of kit if hoping to drive two motors diferentially using either a mixer or mixing from the transmitter.  If the "brake" facility cannot be programmed out, it is even less use in a mixing situation.
Best to save up a few more pennies and get ESCs that are intended to do the job properly, rather than get something that won't do the job, and then have to go shopping again.

Well both mine take 40+ Ned each running 3 motors there only snag is you cannot go straight to reverse
 there is a slight delay you just have to  drive better :}

Jay.....if I not correct ;)....this is for the proposed drive of a model RN Aircraft Carrier with 3 x steam turbines as population

She would have taken 10 minutes to ram the astern steam into the valving to the turbines......or enough time to eat a Granny Smith apple

Let Captain Paul suffer...it is his build O0...& he is making a great job of it :-))

Well after some checks and set ups have ordered three new New ESC 12v 30 amp to run with the P40.  so waiting for them to arrive.  I have run these ESC on the voltage range of 4v to 7.2v in an MTB with three motors and the same mixer.  The boat runs without any problem and reaches plane in seconds.  They are good value for the the money and for the time that I use them.  The double unit I have I will put that into a two motor unit which will not need a mixer.

As for the P40, I understand how it works. I was hoping that with the two motor connection to the motors would run both power supply. So to turn one way or the other the power supply would be reduced to say the outer motor would be reduced to curtail the motor speed and thereby give the same result.

Derek As said I ran  my 1/24 Pt 596 and 1/24 S-Boot on one of these Esc's powering   3 motors in each and with 3 rudders never hit anybody yet.Whilst I agree they cant possibly cope with the claimed 320A the certainly do as well if not better than the Well known ones usually mentioned on here

AC series motors include induction motor and synchronous motor. AC induction motor is also known as an asynchronous motor. They are available in two varieties: single phase induction motor and three induction phase. Single phase motor operates on a single phase power supply. It is used for home application as small electric motors. Try to check this guidehttp://www.powerjackmotion.com/product-category/electric-motor/ this might give you some help and options.
