Steam tug plating help?
« on: June 23, 2017, 08:48:42 pm »

Hi all,

I'm trying to gather data for the next build which will be a pre-WW1 steam tug of the type common to the period.

I've ordered a copy of 'British Steam Tugs' which hopefully will have it covered but, in the meanwhile, has anyone any info on the plate lay and fixing that would be typical of the period, both for the hull and the deck.

I'm building at 1:36 so there is plenty of scope for visible error!

Cheers

Tony

Hi Tony, afraid I am no expert pre WW1, but here is a pic of a vessel about the period you are talking about a single screw naval tug.

Cheers dodes,

I'm working on the theory that there would tend to be a standard size of basic sheet dimension, along the lines of the 8x4 ply/hardboard etc. so all info is needed, especially the fore/aft sizes since the joins seem to disappear in most of the photos.

Hi mate, be interested in your build, though I expect there was not much difference between 1900 and the 1930's, seeing it is a an old well established build system.

This any good? It's American, but probably not too different.

Hi George,

That would be excellent.
That's a beautiful model. Have you used litho plate or do you have a secret system? ok2
Many thanks again for the prop you made for me. It performs beautifully and I'll definitely be needing another, bigger, one shortly!

Kind Regards

Hi Tony,

I have used 0.2mm thick alu sheets for plating. The rivets are simulated with a homemade rivet tool.
Glad you like the prop :-))

Thanks again George,

Any idea what the size of the largest single plate would be approximately or what the actual hull length is so I can calculate the rough size.

Cheers

Hi Tony.

That tug is 28.6m long.
Basically, the lenght of one plate was around 4m with a 1.1-1.2m width but every shipyard had their own tehniques. I would go for a plate size like 4m x 1.2m.

Hi John,

I have used UHU elapor, elastic glue for attaching Alu sheets to the hull.
