Revell 1/72 Corvette R/C Conversion.
« on: June 27, 2017, 10:27:29 pm »

Got a little bored with my Gato and Enterprise build so side lined them for the moment.
Moving home didn't help, but now got a little more space to work in.
I started the build on the corvette about the same time as the Enterprise, but found that with my dodgy eyesight and fat fingers, the corvette was a better option at the moment.
The postings will be a little out of sync as I haven't built it following the instruction sequence.
As most already know the kit has many faults such as over scale hull plates, porthole eyebrows, embossed deck planking etc.

The first job I tackled was the flange that joins the hull sections together, this isn't obvious on the real ship.
Then all the moulded deck planking needed removing where it wasn't evident on the real thing. Copious use of wet/dry paper was used to remove this (plus finger prints)
The hull comes in four separate pieces that are joined both vertically and horizontally. I attached the fore and aft sections first using the moulded in recesses but drilling through the joint and inserting plastic rod in the holes.
After these joints had set I joined the two halves together using clamps, and reinforced the kit cross braces that I considered too weak for a model that is going to be in constant use.

As well as the reinforcement to the hull braces, I made up some trusses to support internal decking to help keep out any water intrusion to the electrics & RC gizmo's.
These are made up from rocket stems I collected from around the neighbourhood on New Years day (always knew they would come in handy one day)

The decks were then scribed to replicate deck plating.

I've got the Platinum edition which might be my next build so I'll watch this with interest.  Have you already painted the forecastle?

Mine is also the Platinum edition but I purchased several GLS add-ons as well.
Just started weathering the bridge area this evening.
The forecastle was done earlier and sealed with Kleer ready for some more weathering.

Nice weathering job, do you use oils or powders?

A combination of Vallejo acrylics (thinned) and cheap (poundland/pound stretcher) ladies make up powders and Johnsons Kleer.

Made a start with the GLS add-ons, the pom pom 2 pounder.
Not perfect but it will do for me.

Another GLS part I used was the funnel, which now comes pre-rolled.
This also includes the ladder, vent/whistle pipes and main mast, and cowl rings.
Not too sure about the mast as I have the brass one included in the kit,
I feel this will be more sturdy than the white metal one.
I also incorporated a Graupner smoke unit inside the funnel.

As I would need access to the interior to fiddle with the electrical bits & pieces, I needed to make some hatches.
Like most naval vessels there is always plenty of rigging etc. this can cause problems with connecting/disconnecting
these items.
To make things easier, I made the main superstructure the main hatch, as the main mast would be on this hatch, the rigging will come  off with the hatch.
To secure the hatches I used my usual magnet catches.

Weathering applied to the wooden and steel decks, with Kleer between coats (good for waterproofing too)
The weathering was done with thinned Vallejo acrylics, and women's make up powders from poundland and poundstretcher.

Took a deep breath and decided to do a water test today.
Living in an apartment with a wet room instead of a bathroom, I used the container for our Christmas tree.
No leaks, but need 608 grms of ballast to get down to the water line.

The mine rails on the stern are attached to the hatch over the rudder linkage for access.
I have also made a start on the GLS cork floats, just the wooden slats to paint and the ropes to be attached.

Life boats and float completed.
Haven't yet decided which way around to secure them, float to the platform or rear platform.

Just caught up with this build, very impressive :-))
I do like your weathering, and I am mighty impressed with the 'U' section coffer dams around your flat hatches, clever solution. I look forward to seeing the vessel on the water.

A little update.
Mast built from aluminium tube and a mixture of GLS/Premium/kit parts, as the kit one was too flexible and the GLS one was too weak.

Bow railings using GLS white metal stanchions and .45 fishermen's monofilament for the rope.

Having found this blog at last, I am very impressed with the weathering and the amount of work done on upgrading this kit, which while still good after forty years or so, is showing it's age detail wise. Your attention to things like converting the decks to steel plate is brill  :-))

Some of the work over the last few days.
Some mods to the depth charges and racks, and more GLS railings with monofilament for the rope.
All need a coat of paint when I'm in the mood, just enjoying building at the moment.

Even with the weathering I thought it looked a little boring in just grey.
Historically incorrect, but thought I would liven it up a bit.
Not completed more to do yet, then weathering again.

Great build like the others above impressed with the details and the weathering, I like the dazzle camouflage suits the model even if not totally right looks good.

I have made a start on the GLS PE and white metal weapons sets.
Got to admit they stretched the limits of my eyes and fingers, so not completed yet.
4 pdr main weapon, Hedgehog anti submarine projectiles and Oerlikon medium weapons.
The only real fault I would mention, is the poor assembly instructions provided.

A few additions to the 4pdr cupola, and then etch priming all the PE I have done so far.
