Planking
« on: July 02, 2017, 09:07:08 am »

I am sure this has been asked before so I apologise in advance.
So the question
I am building the Anteo as a scratch build.
I have the keel and frames fitted etc etc I am about half an hours work away from planking I think so is there any method?
Any advice as to what to do and how to do it please?
Thanks Fred

I'm guessing this is the ship? what size will it be?

I made a Billing Norden some years ago, plank on frame, only a static small trawler.

What tools do you have, - pencil- razor saw - David razor plane - plank bender - pliers - pins - aliphatic wood glue... abrasive paper to your choice is what i used, thats about it i think.

Think i have a few photo's somewhere if they would be any help.

Its the Italian  tug ANTEO.
I bought the plans  which is exciting  they are all in Italian
Its just short of a metre long
I'll stick up a pic to show you where I have got to.

the only hint I can give is clamp at the bow first as this is generally the tightest curve. I use a wallpaper steamer and give each plank 10 minutes, then out it comes and gets clamped in place. after that it gets left until the next evening before gluing, then I glue that one and steam the next on the opposite side.
thats the other tip, work each side at the same time, otherwise you can get the keel warping.

hi ya Fred

what happened to your Cervia build?  wonder what put you off - you can use the same style of planking on the tug you want to build now - this type of planking is detailed in the Cervia build topic

Bluebird the discrepancies between my plan for the Cervia and your sizes I couldn't be arsed to spend days figuring out a solution as I was wanting to cut plywood.
Plus I have had the plans for the ANTEO for ages I thoght I'd give that a go
But thanks for all the tips matey.

First can I thank Bluebird for his Master class on the Cervia and yes mate I have read your section on planking it makes me feel a tad easier on doing it.
So again matey thanks.
Bluebird said there were several ways to plank and thats where I am now coming from.  I see some 'plankers' start at the gunwhale and move down is there any advantage to this?
The reason I ask is that I started planking the ANTEO yesterday and 'oh my gawd'  what a gerfuffle especially around back end (sorry stern) I started from the keel up.
I just couldn't get plank one and plank two to be flush.  I think I know now what to do but advice would be good.
I think the method I was using which was to try and plank using one plank to do the whole length instead of doing it in 'fit size' chunks if that makes sense
So it was to remove what I had done and start again.  But thats how we learn I guess.
So again any tips advice stories on how you did it would be most welcome.
Thanks again all and sonar for the plans.

This is the best guide that I have been able to find.  It really explains what needs to be done step by step
