Old Huntsman (ish) rebuild
« on: July 03, 2017, 04:51:00 pm »

Picked up a 32nd hand Huntsman ish looking boat the other day as something to tinker with thats fast. (well faster than my usual scale stuff) About 33"long by just over 11" wide. Looks like is was an old boat quickly refurbed for a kid to mess about with.
After a quick play at Sumners Ponds I am now getting stuck in to sorting it out. Did a long leak test over the weekend and discovered the prop shaft was held in by hot glue, was being the operative word! Not a major worry as I am changing over to brushless so are changing a lot of the interior anyway.
Now I have a question for the masses. I noticed that the angle of the shaft is fairly high. Any reason for this on the fast boats other than to allow for the diameter of the motor?

Hi Z750Jay
The high prop angle was to get the IC motors in with the flywheel and starter cord.
As you are fixing the drive line it would be a good idea to shallow the driveline.
About 10mm prop clearance.
As you are going brushless motor I suggest a Hobbyking 3639-1100kv, 3S 5800mah Lipo battery, 60 Amp ESC (I use the car ones(HK-60A SL) and a 2 blade 40mm.
NO water cooling required.
I use this setup in my Sea Commander (34") good turn of speed and good run time.

Hope this helps!!!

Cheers,

Already have a brushless (ripmax quantum II 25) and a ESC to go with it. Was going to run off of a pair of 7.2 4.8 Amp NiHm's in series to give me 14.4v - never got on with LiPo's in my cars (crawlers) plus I tend to use my batteries as ballast.

Hi Z750Jay
My battery is 475 grams and I did not a ballast only moved the battery to forward of the motor about amidships.
That motor on 4S will get the old girl going!!!
My first brushless was in an old Tamiya Falcon Dune buggy, from 90 watts 21000 rpm to 550 watts 26000 rpm.
A tyre spinning hellcat!!

lol, this boat needs the ballast - it sits way too high in the wayer.
I have seen the results of brushless + LiPo combination on my clubs MTB's. Rather impressive, would like the LiPo performance, I just do not seem to get on with them - I keep killing them. I like to use my 7.2v packs on both my boats and cars as I am a cheapskate so they tend to have a rough life. I can normally 'save' an abused NiHm or at least salvage enough cells from a couple of dead ones to make a good one while once a LiPo is dead its dead. Mostly from me forgetting about them and leaving them fully drained  :embarrassed:

Hi Z750Jay
I use the battery low voltages cutout in the ESC and a low voltage/alarm unit.
I have not kill a Lipo so far!!!
A few months ago my brother's son was over on holidays and he got out his old race setup Tamiya Falcon.
We had a run around the track for a few laps( I sat in behind him).
I finally show him what brushless and Lipo's DO!!!
It is nice seeing a jaw seating on the ground with pop eyes!!!

OLD GUYS CAN GO FAST TOO !!!
