Möwe II from Aero-Naut
« on: March 11, 2017, 05:49:11 pm »

Visited my "local" model shop for some small parts and was tempted of the very good price and simple construction of the Möwe II from Aero-Naut

It is a very simple model where everybody can participate both skill wise and price wise. And it is a very good choice for a father and son (daughter) build.

To keep the over all price down I shopped around for a cheap small ESC, my local Model shop didn't have anything smaller than a Robbe Rookie 20A with a price tag around the same as for the kit, so it is a Ch... 20A from the interweb and the same for the 9g Blue servo.

All in all the kit and instruction is very good and there are only a few things that can be done in a better way.

1: The flag post is the wrong size, in the kit it is a 3mm dowel of wood, it should be a 1.5mm brass pin.
2: The deck, it shows that it should be fitted after the sides, I would fit it before as it will be easier and you get a good seal between the side and the deck.
3: The window frames is cut so they will support the windows, but they have forgotten this with doors.

Most of the parts comes out without any problems, but some of the thin sheets is strengthen with a thin fabric and this can cause some minor issues, but just ad a bit more glue that you normally would and it is not a problem.

Motor is included in the kit and is the first that is mounted. There were missing 1 screw but the spare box provided that.

Until now I have only used the most basic tools as a knife and a lot of small clamps. Most sophisticated tool one need is a soldering iron.

As most of the parts don't need that much fitting, you can build some of the other parts of the model when the first are drying.

The glue that is in the kit sets within 5min and it makes it easy to assemble with.

Please remember to clean the laser cut edges with sandpaper before assembling else it may fall apart in your hands later.

Until now I have spend approx. 10-12 hours on the build

I decide to treat some of the parts with a teak stain, so the deck, deck for the upper structure, window frames and doers got to times.

Sides going on, used some "nails" for that as the suggested solution with tape didn't work. It is also before this step that I would mount the deck if I would build it again. The stand in the background has been teak stained 3 times and had 3 coats of varnish.

Hi tica

You have made good progress with your build,
I think the aeronant kit's are pretty good value and go together as well as any other kit's on the market .

Good luck with the rest of your build

Hi Spud

Thank you for the comment  :-))

I'm almost done with the model, have a date with the pool on April 1th. And more pics. to follow when I'm back from business trip to Germany.

I'm running the Danish equivalent to Modelboatmayhem known as www.skalamodelskibe.dk (no direct dependency between sites) and simply forgot to post on Modelboatmayhem to cover a bigger audience  :D

Before the sides is glued on I would mount the deck and maybe also make some kind of support in the bottom for the mast.

To make the hull stronger the kit contain a extra set of sides that has to be glued in place, these requires a good amount of glue as they are covered with fabric on the side where the glue is supposed to be applied. And again a lot of small clamps are good to have  :-))

It only required a minimum of sanding filler and I'm using water based colours from Vallejo.

As one see I choose to go for another colour scheme than the original shows.

RC equipment, 20A forward/backwards from C.... 2S LiFe 1700mA battery, a 9g servo and a orange Spektrum receiver, simple and affordable setup.

The clear coat is now drying up and the last small items is missing, including some LED's for lights.

Please note that I did add epoxy on all joints from the inside and the inside has also gotten 2 X clear varnish for protection.

It is a simple build but still with lots going on on deck. There is also room for you add more stuff if you want to later.

Lovely job  :-))

Well skipped the pool yesterday as the weather were to good to be inside, and the garden needed some TLC.

So today I took my trusty VW T3 panelvan out for the first km's today and went by VMK's lake for a test.

I have not added any extra weight to balance it at all, just placed the electronics as described in the manual. For those who have looked at the bundle of this kit mentioned in another post, please think about the weight of a 7.2V NiMh cell and believe me one don't need that amount of voltage.

I have used a 1700mA 2S (6.6V) LiFe battery and it is more than enough. The model weighs in at 700grams.

That is a bit to fast for it, but it is still in control.

Sweet little boat  :-)) I especially like your club's harbour, very stylish. It reminds me of a japanese water garden feature.

Can you sit on the walls surrounding the harbour? That would be lovely on a fine day.
