Hi Hans,

When I commence building my Paula 3 I also intend to install a bow thruster. Reading some other modeller's experiences with bow thrusters I wondered if you consider it worthwhile making an access hatch in the deck in order to remove the bow thruster's motor and paddle if there is a problem?

On your build you have mounted the bow thruster so that the motor is vertical. I wonder if it could be rotated by 90 degrees so that the motor lies horizontal? It should then make it possible to unscrew the motor screws by reaching through the main hatch.

I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this. Am I being over cautious in the need to provide an access to the bow thruster for maintenance?

Also is your bow thruster driven by an ESC to give variable thrust or a simple on-off switch?

Kind regards

Pauli

Hello Pauli,

this topic is a question of risk to take or not to take.

as I had no negative experience with bow thrusters from "Raboesch" I decided not to add an maintenance access.
I case I would need it in the future I would than cut an access hole and cover it with a hatch.

Turning the thruster by 90 degrees looks is a good idea, that you can later still reach the fastening screws.
Since this area for access is in my boat already used up by equipment  > this not an option for me.

My small thruster is driven by a mini controller that works direct from the receiver (like a servo).

Hi Hans,

Thanks you for your reply.

Yes, as you say - very much a question of risk. I will probably leave the deck as it is and retro fit a hatch later on if I encounter problems.

I may, however, explore the possibility of mounting the bow thruster horizontally, unless I hear of any plausible reasons not to mount it in that orientation.

Thanks once again for your courtesy in replying to my many questions throughout your build-log. Your replies have been very helpful  :-))

Hello,

there was today an opening in the clouds with sunshine;
my camera assistant was available and off we go to our pond:

S4-02017HPG.jpg

With full speed ahead the hull seems to be more a glider than a working vessel; this requires some adjustment in the setup; the motor is too strong:

The video is being processed and will follow soon; also a decent load is being prepared.

Best Regards
Cheers

Hi Hans,

Your model looks really good, and sits well on the water. I have read on a few other people's builds of the Paula 3 that they considered that the motor was perhaps too powerful for the model, but I suppose you can always do something about this such as a change of prop or reduction in battery voltage.

By the way, I like the first aid and fire hose box's. They add a nice extra touch off detail - may ask where you got these from?

Looking forward to seeing your video.  :-))

Kind regards,

Hi Hans,

Your model performs really well on the water and has a good turn of speed when you open up the throttle!

I'd be interested to see what load you eventually use with the crane. I really think it needs something in order to make full use of the crane mechanism.

The camera works well - I like the way you rotated the model on the bow thruster to make a panning shot around the pond.

Congratulations on your build it was well worth the time and effort you put into it's construction - I have picked up quite a few tips from your build-log for when I commence my build.

Kind regards,

Pauli

Hello Pauli,

thanks for your positive Feedback and nice comments.

The load is already in the works and i might try it in the dry dock next week.

Hello,

handling buoys was never my favorite; I always had a ROV for handling with the crane in mind.

So I bought a defective Mini-Sub and removed all electronic equipment, to make a little bit lighter:

Adding a "catching-ring", closing all openings glueing all parts together was the next step:
S4-01161HPG.jpg

Finally a new paint and I see something that could be an underwater-unit.

The tilting area of the crane was reduced a bit and the drytests could commence.

All the best for Christmas to all Mayhemers and stay healthy

Hi Hans,

The mini-sub works well with the crane and makes a nicely balanced load for it to raise and lower. It looks really good with the new paint job.
Wishing you a merry Christmas!

Hello

On New-Years-Day it happened: the dryruns from the workbench moved to the pond.

With beautiful weather new insights were generated:

watering the submarine = no Problem;

picking it up was rather difficult and after various trials it was stopped for the day.
the gear for that function (hook and others) needs some redesign.
the catching wires as per original plan seems to have a reason for existance;
however I will still try to make it work without them.

Also the cam in the water requires a ballast in the bottom to avoid tilting

Tight turns are no problem for this boat as the center of gravity is low enough.

Details can be seen in the video below.

Best Regards and all the best for 2022

Hello

since the retrieving of the ROV was not successful some changes were incorporated:

two sycringes were taken to build additional floating devices:
S4-01166HPG.jpg

Inside of the tubes a M3-scew was placed and the tubes were glued to the ROV:
S4-01170HPG.jpg

Inside the hull a strong peranent magnet was placed:
S4-01172HPG.jpg

This combination is strong enoug to hold the ROV in position:
S4-01173HPG.jpg

So far the general idea; but is the crane strong enough to work against the magnetic force and detach ROV from the boat?
The video shows the drytest

And still it remains the waiting for better conditions to test the whole issue on water.

Hi Hans,

An imaginative solution to the problem of retrieving the ROV and should work - but the real test will be in the water!

yesterday we had nice and calm weather, so a first watertest was started to see if the additional magnet in the transom will improove the fetching of an object in the water.
simple answer: it does;
Also an additional run with full speed was done to demonstrate the overpowered drive of the kit.

https://youtu.be/DzzCd9-T-VE

still open is improoving the crane for easier manipulation of the hook.
Best regards.

Hi Hans,

Thanks for updating your build.

The ROV sits nicely in the water and the magnet seems to provide just enough force to hold the ROV in place for the crane's grappling hook to engage.

It would be nice to see a video of the crane lowering the ROV and then recovering it in order to fully demonstrate your system.

By the way, your local pond is vey nice with some delightful properties situated close by - I am very envious.

Kind regards,

Pauli

Hi Pauli,

you are right - the next video will show the complete cycle.
I am still trying some options to make the crane operation more suitable.

I love this pond; it is in the lovely village of Wassenberg.

Hallo,

here is video about the final testrun after building the model; including dropping off and retrieving the "dive unit" and lowering an underwater cam.

https://youtu.be/9bVG0e2CMOY

So far so good; the crane operator need some more exercises and the dive-unit needs to be replaced with a more realistic unit.

Best Regards

Hi Hans,

Thanks for updating your project.

The crane system works really well, although probably requires quite a lot of skill from the operator in order to launch and retrieve the submersible.

The mini-cam is an interesting addition to the project.

Kind regards,

Pauli
