Looking for 'Proper' Elastic bands.
« on: August 05, 2017, 02:10:28 pm »

Does anybody know of a supplier of decent elastic bands ?

All the ones that I have bought recently seem to be made from (I suspect)
synthetic rubber, and fall apart at the first whiff of UV light.

I use them for everything from fastening down Club 500 motors, to holding
models in their stands, and fastening sheet and strip materials in my supply
cupboard. Time and time again I end up with stinging fingers as soon
as I stretch a laggy band to put it around something and it snaps!

Richard.......for the larger applications such as securing those 500 series motors you could use 1.78 diameter section Nitrile O-rings......70 Duro would be preferable providing more stretch.......

Hi, I keep my elastic bands (ex postman) in a cardboard container (pills etc.) with a close fitting lid.  They keep a long while no light no air and in a drawer, just in case.

IT is the post man bands that are the worst for not lasting. This is (now) a design feature, because they drop so many they were becoming a litter problem, so they are now (sort of) bio degradable.

Also they should be using red bands, not the brown ones, because ( I kid you not) hedgehogs were trying to eat the brown ones thinking they were worms, and dying as a consequence.

So now post office bands must be bio degradable and red, and pretty much useless for any long term jobs.

I used to use the old ex-postie red laggy bands but our lot don't seem to drop any these days!

JaB - I have tried both the links you posted without success - will go straight to the Slec website.

derekwarner_decoy
will follow up the Nitrile O-rings suggestion - sounds promising.

With ordinary rubber bands is it heat or light (or both!) that causes them to degrade ?
I think mine fail if they are left exposed to light.

Weird! - just been onto the SLEC website but it keeps dumping me back onto Model Boat Mayhem pages
with a strange blue summary page . !!!!

I am using Windows 10, + Firefox :embarrassed: - will switch to the Chrome browser and see if the same thing is happening !

Hmmm! Chrome works fine  O0 -  will have to switch to it when placing an order . . .

like I said, weird - must be another mysterious Firefox 'improvement'  ! :P

Richard

p.s. - good tip about rubber bands on the SLEC site ..."Rinse in washing up liquid for longer life"
will try that with these manky rubber bands I already have.

Hi Richald

I flew R/C model aircraft for over 20 years.. not a brilliant 'pilot' I dont mind telling you all, I found it hard to learn and spent 2 yesrs on training  :embarrassed:

I didnt get enough 'stick time' ..essential for reasonably quick learning, its like learning to drive, shorter time between lessons is far better than 1 lesson every two weeks, I now from experienc with both

SO i think i may be qualified to give an opinion? .

Eventually allowed to go solo, had 2 terminal crashes in 6 weeks, 1st Precesent Hi - Boy totalled...

2nd A MIck Revees Gangster 52" wingspan...totalled, both pilot error.

dis- orientation in both cases.

I moved on to small home built models, a club favorite was a modifed 'Purple Haze' a 36" foam wing and ply and balsa fuzz model powered by a 20-32 O.S. or similar i.c. engine.
wings were held on with elastic bands. we used the white ones from the model shop, yes we has them in those days, choice of 3 locally !!! within 30-45 mins drive.

more later or i'll get timed out.

Right..... elastic bands {-)

They have many practical uses as we all know, incluluding retaining the wings on flying models, not just R/C models, they are used by fliers of free flight planes and the chaps that do fly them can be serious modellers.
First find the correct size, keep your stock in plastic boxes e.g. ice cream tubs are ideal, dust with talc or even flour, self raising or plain...your choice! dont get the box too hot in summer after flying and not bothering to wipe the fuel off first or you will 'bake your bands'..no not really just thought I'd slip that one in while the mods were not looking  :embarrassed:

back in a bit  8)

OK busy day ahead so i'll get down to the nitty gritty.

To recap..

white bands are best.
keep them in a plastic container.
Dust with talc or flour.
keep them clean..wash after use in warm soapy water, yes washing up liquid is fine..dry well.
put back in container.
They will rot in time no matter what you do.
Keep a good stock handy when out boating/flying or what ever else you use them for !

Nitrile O rings would work very well too, i've never used those, so cant comment.

Buy in bulk from SLEC if you can.

Different sizes should be in your kit to suit.

Any questions dont ask me how would I know anyway???.

I would answer any question if your being serious too.!!! only kidding I'm not aloof or clever ask away If you wish or If you think I've left anything out.. :-))

Cheers.

I've had posty bands for years and some of them go brittle over time ( red or brown) but it is usually a long time before they do. Being kept in a static bag and in the dark helps.

They are free and last a reasonable time. Just the job  :-))

Yes I think you are probably correct.. with keeping them in the dark is the secret...sunlight does appear to have an advers effect on rubber, difficult if you are using them a lot especially during the summer months..  :-)) ;)

having rubber bands in a boat hull out of the light may..but only may... make them last a bit longer than on a plane looking up at that big yellow thing in the sky! not seen it too much myself. been stuck in hospi......... no no dont remind myself  :-X <:(
