Windows 10?
« on: August 11, 2017, 10:31:32 am »

As I needed a Replacement PC my son bought this from PC World,
    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/hp-pavilion-570-p019na-desktop-pc-10159071-pdt.html

it was the easiest way for us and  I'm sure it will suit., this is our 5th HP pavillion PC. 4 laptops and my curret desktop.

I'm told by my son that this HP PC does not have an OS installed?.
I'm also told PC World will, for a £40 fee, do it all for me...not likely!.
I said to boss man son  i'll do it myself no problem, he  said takes 5 hours...have to get a Flash Drive too so he got a USB 3.0 32GB  drive ?.

Next I pipes up..silly daft MOG that I am, i'll install Linux !!! son brought me the latest mag last week.
Son says ..no don't do that with this expensive computer  it's not easy.

No fighting this time...he's fired 1 driver this week. Dont want to lose my position as company Sec. !
I dont get paid anything  or even reconognized in the firm ...it just make s me feel useful....or do i mean useless?.

Only being a Dad..he's doing a really good job with his work..

 Any advice...
Or do I let the shop sort it all out, I spoke to Jon our trailer driver yesterday. he says forget Win 10 you don't want that !...he uses Win 8.1 still.
 JaB.

We install Windows 10 (1703 build ) many times a day, takes about 2  hours max, including all the cumulative updates on a slow broadband link!

That Pc says it comes with Windows so I assume it would be installed or at worst it will be on a DVD disc which is pretty straight forward to install.

fire it up with a linux live disk, then you will see how it runs under linux, running from the live CD will be slower than running from the hard drive, nowadays I only bother with a windows machine if I have a piece of software that will only run from windows. my linux laptop boots up from cold in about 30 seconds, when it ran windows XP it used to take about 5 minutes to boot.

Windows 10 boots up in 7 seconds for me with fast  boot enabled in BIOS. 11 seconds otherwise.

PC's nowadays usually come pre-installed with the operating system and no backup disk.

I've got Windows 10 on my PC and laptop and had no problems except for it insisting on doing updates just when you don't want them and stopping you from using it!

Yes, you have to be wary of staff at PC World - when I bought my current PC they tried to tell me my Microsoft Office 2010 wouldn't install and tried to sell me a later version.

Pack of lies as it installed as sweet as a nut.

Win10 is way too unsafe and all personal infos can be tracked. We had Win10 for a few days and downgraded back to Win7.  I will stay with Win7 and the day it will not be supported anymore I will switch to a Laptop with Linux.

must be lilly the pink. as for the live CD's, you just set the machine to boot from the cd / dvd drive first, put the cd in and away you go, its a good way to trial linux without committing to it, after you finish, eject the cd and the machine will boot as normal to windows.

That is too easy, every Liverpudlian of the 60's knows that .. John Gorman, ably assisted by Roger and Mike.

True but if you're on the internet, any authority .... or anyone with enough time, money can see / track what you're doing, if they really want to!   {:-{

It only does the tracking if you were the ideal customer for every software company, just using "recommended" settings without doing any actual thinking.  I had to clean out a mates PC several years ago.  He had been using "recommended" settings when installing programs so that a large part of his browser screen was covered with "helpers" as "recommended".
The real tracking happens with your search engine, whatever system you are using.  Search engines are "free", therefore the customer becomes the product, they gather information about their customers to sell on.
The only real problem with W10 that I have run across is the updates.  The lack of notification and lack of choice of timing and lack of estimate of time taken by them can be a real PITA.

As per your last paragraph, as I said earlier that's my biggest gripe. It literally takes over your PC and stops you using it which is unacceptable, especially as it feels the need to carry out so many updates.

Other than that it's fine, but for myself and probably most users it doesn't really do anymore than the previous versions. Most of the so called "improvements" aren't really required by most folks.

For me it's the software that I use that's important, not the operating system.
