Filler advice please
« on: August 28, 2017, 11:03:07 am »

I've got some minor damage to one of the spray rails/strakes.

They are balsa and it looks as though some paint has been knocked off and taken a little of the balsa with it.

Obviously I need to sort this before taking it to the water. I could just touch up the paint but I really want to fill it first.

So what do you guys recommend for filling given that it needs to be easy to sand?

The damage is about 10mm long and a couple of mm deep.

Thanks, Chris

I use polyfilla for such small filling.
You must remember it is water soluble so prime, undercoat and topcoat.

Thanks for the reply Bob. I've used Polyfilla around the house but have always found it a little hard to sand. Have you used it on fairly delicate parts?

Brummer Stopping if you can get it, you may need a specialist woodworking shop rather that a DIY mega store. Water based and sands down to a really smooth finish. Available in several colours.

Halfords sell a product called Dolphin Glaze it is a 2 part stopper for fine filling and it comes in a bag and is around £13 enough to do all your filling

Thanks for the replies, a number of options there.

I was in Halfords today so had a look around. All my local shop had was P38.

The Brummer sounded interesting so Googled it and Amazon have it.

Green Label is their exterior version (Yellow for interior use) and a small tin is £6.85 so not too expensive.

It's a one part filler which is better for small amounts and available in a range of wood colours and white which is what I've ordered.

Thanks, Chris

Chris,
The pollyfiller I have is fairly fine when sanded.
If you want it harder I rub down to what I want then apply a few drops of superglue.
I still prime undercoat and topcoat after.

You can now get fillers for exterior use that are superfine, even better you slap it into the gap, and then smooth it off with a wet finger or spatula. Check out decoraters filler. This is not to be confused with the wide range of silicone fillers available.

Brummer should be arriving today so hopefully that will do the job.

Obviously it will still need painting but in the description it says that it is resistant to sea water. I won't be testing that claim out but it's a good sign.
