Dumas Brooklyn Tug
« on: September 01, 2017, 10:23:04 am »

My tug has a 3" prop, 12 volt Dumas motor, speed controller, viper  marine 20 - 6-12 volt output. I need to take the voltage down to 6 volt for rudder servo , what regulator would be best, I have heard of an outlander from Sussex Model Centre , how do I wire it up. And could a sail servo be used for the rudder ??

Hi Zil, welcome to Mayhem.
I've just checked the specifications for the Viper esc and it comes with a BEC to provide a lower voltage (probably 4.8V ) for the receiver and servos. You shouldn't need a regulator. You would be better with a normal servo for rudder than a sail servo. Use a high torque servo to give you better power to the rudder but no need for a 6V supply just the normal supply from the BEC in the speed controller.

Hi Zil

Could I ask were you are located, I only ask as if you are in the Shoreham - Brighton area it may be of interest to you that there is a model boat club at the Swiss Cottage Pub in Shoreham, we meet on a Thursday from 10.00am and some Sunday's.

That's all right, Mr Ryan. My Morse is so rusty, I could be sending him dimensions on Playmate of the Month.

Hi Zil.

Welcome to the Forum.

I have moved your reply back into this post to keep them all together.

The answer to your question is it takes the voltage supply from the receiver, which is around 5 volts or so.

Cheers
