A member on the Model Boats Forum is interested in building Glynn Guest's latest sub design but says be cannot find a supplier of new 27/40 meg radios.

I have run a quick internet search and they do seem to have all disappeared from mainstream supplier adverts.

Are they simply no longer being made? It seems only recently that Howes Models had a good selection on offer but now nothing, just 2.4Ghz

I can remember when some of us made our own Tx's And Rx's.
Whether they actually worked or not was another matter...

Surely...can someone not draw up a few now? or dig them out of the old books etc..? I appreciate crystals could be a problem but we also had those crystal -less sets...what were they called..can't remember...or am I just being silly

People don't do that these days I'm afraid!That was 40-50 years ago!

Everyone just buys 2.4 gHz now, they've no idea how it works but it's tough on model submariners.

Robbe f-14 systems on 40mhz are still available from lots of different hobby sites....

Yes I know I had a few mates/club members who had home built radio gear, Remcom and MIcron,  Rcm & E. magazine had their own design,  not just for modellers on a tight budget either, real modelling in those days, you even built you own model...

It's a bit like windows 10 ..you have to or ...

Plenty on ebay......but you will pay nowadays.  I bought 6 sets when 2.4 came in with a few rx's and crystals for my subs. They are still about though not new  unless you pick up a f14

Quite a few at our club are on 27 & 40 MHz, the bank bristles with very long aerials.
40 MHz is essential for submarines and ultra low freeboard / semi-submersibles.
Since the once ubiquitous Planet T5 stopped manufacture almost all 2.4 GHz sets are designed for planes and helicopters, with loads of computerised functions almost useless add-ons for model boats.
Do I really want to set a maximum altitude for my boat, or store dozens of set-ups for a rudder and motors?
Unfortunately we seem to be a dying breed.  No one is designing decent radio equipment for boats any more.

Scroll down, many options on both 40mhz and 2.4G now available. Bespoke assembled to order I believe. Not cheap, but you gets what you pays for.....cheap Chinese alternatives also available, no doubt see comments to follow

At least one company is holding up our end then, who will be first to try and find/order an F-14 40meg, anyone in the trade taking a Futaba F-14 40meg or several to Blackpool? I just might be persuaded... at a good price?
twinstick or not really necessary for most of us? saw one once at B/pool show 2005 I think, ok if your running a full size vosper like a captain  ? seen a couple of RTTL's converted into private yachts... Last 35MhZ set I bought in 2004 (aircraft flier then)..JR 2610 - full set inc 4 servos - batteries and charger cost £189.99 ...still have the invoice..
F-14 about £120 - 210 for Tx + Rx. can't see a price for RX on it's own or crystals? more info needed, I can't see it all on Ripmax sife, not saying it's not listed but where are the Prices?.

I have two sitting in the shed which I am giving to our club.
One is new old stock from my purchase of a un finished Precedent Huntsman a few moths ago.
I tested OK and never had the servos connected to anything!!!

Hi all has anyone tried using a 35 Mhtz set but with suitable 40 Mhtz crystals?  I seem to remember reading that one manufacturer used one design of rx for both frequencies.
Also many years ago I sent a 27Mhtz FM Futaba set for repair and it came back set up for 35 Mhtz.  When I contacted them they denied it so I asked them if they wanted the 35 Mhtz crystal back?
As Glynn Guest did a test with a 2 volt battery as motor power source on an esc which worked, it might be worth some experimentation.

As a LONG time owner of a Planet tranny, I decided it was time for a change!.
After lots of searching I have bought a Futaba T6L Sport.
Lots of the sets now have a multitude of gadgets on them which most boaters would never use.
The Sport has just what most boaters use all the time.
The Antenna is built into the tranny case, no more breakages !.
The tranny is designed to stand up vertically, or lay down flat, has no flashy Chrome parts, just nice matt black.
Servo reverse on all 6 channels, change which stick does what - - all boaty things!!.
Just what I was looking for !.

the receiver won't be much of a problem, but the transmitter needs to be tuned to make sure it is truly transmitting on the correct frequency.  I have no idea who in the UK could do that tuning for you.

40 MHz regularly come up on ebay at reasonable price second hand, but 27mhz less often.


there are 3 multi channel 40mhz on ebay at the moment.....look in v good condition.
