HMS Prince of Wales
« on: September 01, 2017, 11:11:27 am »

The Naming Ceremony for HMS Prince of Wales is next week, 8 September, to be attended by Prince Charles and his wife Camilla.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4841576/Royal-Navy-s-3bn-aircraft-carrier-HMS-Prince-Wales.html

With lessons learned on building HMS Queen Elizabeth construction is ahead of schedule, and will be quicker.
The new carrier will be 3,000 tons heavier than her sister ship.  Quoted is 70,000 tons.
Due to be launched in 2019.

"Both are far superior to previous leading naval vessels. The Queen Elizabeth, for example, is 300ft longer and 48,000 tonnes heavier than the HMS Invincible, the Navy's former leading aircraft carrier which served in the Falklands War and the Iraq War before being decommissioned in 2005."

I wonder what the extra weight is for? When I get a new router, I will have a read of the article.

Thanks for sharing Bob.

Maybe they are hoping to put some aeroplanes on it?

Hopefully they get the art of sticking the towers on it right this time.

Weights of WW1 capital ships, in the same class, varied quite widely at launch. Maybe this is where the figure comes from? 3000 tonnes difference seems a lot for a final displacement figure.

QE was designed to displace 65,000 tons at first, rising to 70,000 tons over her service life as additions are made.

I have seen a reference to one of the carriers, presumably PoW, having enhanced amphibious capabilities. Perhaps that is the reason for the heavier displacement.

I only wish they'd had some imagination and instead of calling it the P o W.........They could have really pushed the boat out by calling it HMS HARRY and WILLS. %% %% .........far more fitting...and would be in tune with the youth of the day....... O0 O0

good ring to it, too. {-) {-)

QE has apparently already been nicknamed 'Big Lizzie'.

Does that mean that PoW will be called 'Proper Charlie'?

The extra thee thousand tons?  Maybe they temporarily flooded to dock to do a Bath Test, and decided to add a few more bars of lead ballast.  I know the US Nimitz class carry a huge amount of lead (mainly around the reactors).

Coming from afar.....we had names for ships that plied the Australian waters ......

The Iron Somersby [H&W build in Belfast] was named the Golly green Giant as her original hull was green

So back on the Naval thread, I can see the Prince of Wales being dubbed simply as PoW........has a certain something about it  :embarrassed:

Also reminds us of Prisoner's of War  :o

As for the QE, I agree with McGherkin...Tin Lizzie takes the prize  O0

Further to Colin's post, why cant they use the Eurofighter??? Folding delta wing's, arrester hook and add a ski jump to the bows. much like the russian carrier, instead, we wait for an over priced american plane that can barely fly, let alone fight. A home grown plane with adaptations, got to be better than a maybe plane in 5 years time???

My question is, why such a large carrier can only carry less fixed wing aircraft than the old Victorious!!!

Have you seen how big the F-35 is?! :o  It's huge! When you compare it to a Tornado just the physical length is a third longer. They can only fit one F-35 in a HAS compared to two Tonkas.

Hi Nick perhaps, but she is twice the tonnage and physically bigger due to her lighter scantlings as I believe she does not have a 3" armour flight deck or a steam boiler plant.

Yes maybe so but on paper she can carry a lot more than old Victorious.
Normally she'll carry up to 40 F-35s and a squadron of Merlin AS helicopters but as I've just read she has the designed capability to be overloaded with 70 F-35s, 250 Marines, Chinooks, Wildcats, and Apache attack helicopters. So that needs to be taken into account for the space, storage of parts and GSE, the accommodation of the 250 Marines, all that must add up. Plus like all new vessels she has that extra capacity to have the midlife upgrade so they have inbuilt space for the new equipment.

Hi Nick, that's interesting, It was in our local as 40, a flight of F35b's and Helo's. Which is not much. Though I think they really missed a trick with not fitting a catapult. Then she could have a mix of wings to do various jobs, plus when the F35's come obsolete you can get another replacement easier and cheaper, after all the F35B has a reduced payload compared to the normal fixed wing counter parts.

When I was in Eagle at 56000 tons
There were 2700 of us crew.
Must be room for a bootneck barracks
With just 700 crew there is plenty of space.

Given the redundancy built in as Nick mentions, it suggetsts that 40 is the standard patrol/tour of duty/ small engagement complement to be carried, with the added room for another 35 if we have a proper spat. I had a quick look and it seems we are purchasing nearly 200 F35s so we have enough for both carriers plus spares and 'Wartime' capacity, though we might then have to throw a few blank cheques around to get replacements for war losses God forbid.

The total number of F35A & B type comes to that figure, I some how think there will be less than 50 for the RN as the RAF plans to replace their 160 or so tornado's plus they still have a short fall in planes after their harriers and Jaguars were taken out of service very quickly. Still think that the RN still has a requirement for a dedicated fighter able to dogfight if required.

I wonder if the Queen Elizabeth was just too advanced in build when they thought about CATOBAR conversion and they did some of the redesign work for cats and arrester wires for PoW.

It does look like the new EMALS Electric cats and arrester system will work after a few years getting the snags worked out and both QE and PoW have more than enough power generation capacity to run that system if they convert them later on in life.

As for the F35 purchase I would hope that the treasury can be persuaded that it would be a mix of B variants and C variants ( the conventional carrier one ) so the RAF would use the C variant and if we did convert to CATOBAR then we would already have the aircraft in service.

Regards to the F35, I see the US Navy rejected the plane and went for its own fighter the F37 and their air force has the F22 (raptor) as its fighter.
