Advert Gaffs!
« on: September 05, 2017, 05:22:50 pm »

I often wonder how much research a producer of an advertisement does.........

if anyone knows of some good ones please tell us all as I for one may have missed them.

one that springs to mind is the loan company SUNNY whose advert depicts a guy roller skating down the road, pulling a truck which has multiple vehicles on top of each other ending with a guy sat on a monkey bike.

has anyone seen the advert and noticed something strange about the Volkswagen pick up next to the top...........

for an aircooled engine situated at the rear of the vehicle.............why is smoke coming out of the front under the "bonnet" area..............now that has got me bemused.

now that's what I call a gaff.

Glad to see Admiral Insurance have given the "Admiral" lady the correct rank on her uniform now - the original advert showed the "Admiral" wearing Commander insignia !....pity though, her new coat only has 6 buttons on it (petty officer to fleet chief).

Who does their research - the guy with the specs ??? %%

How about every cosmetic advert where imaginary problems can be cured with a liberal application of bull-shine*?
I hate it that the assumption by the advertisers is that the populace is as thick as two short planks.  I hate it even more when they seem to be right.
*a surprise there, the site spell checker suggested that

Funny, BFSMP, I was just thinking about the Sunny ad when it came on earlier, and scratched my head about that odd VW with the front mounted engine! I wondered if the steam/smoke near the front might actually have been coming from the truck beneath it. If not then, yes it's a blooper.Well spotted, and I like some of the others mentioned so far.

But dare I perhaps point out that your gaffe is to spell gaffe without the 'e' at the end. A gaff is a spar on a sailing ship, or maybe a stick with a hook on the end. I thought you might be talking about ads with sailing ships! :) (Ducks to avoid incoming  {-) )

OK. I want a new car to drive in Britain. Why do most of the car adds  show LHD cars?

LJ, we are by far the minority market, not many countries drive on the left, so adverts are filmed for the major markets

Australia and New Zealand also drive on the "right" side. If the advertising gurus want to woo me, then I want to see what I would get, and that includes the "dolly birds" that drive them!

A lot of the ads used to be 'multi-national'. The car would have a number plate like 111 AVM. To change from RHD to LHD, they'd simply flip the film horizontally, so the plate became MVA 111 and the car would be on the correct side of the road for the intended country.

True, not many countries drive on the left, but I think Japan's quite a major market! I know what you mean though, we see the European makes on TV most of the time and they aren't interested in making a RHD commercial just for us!

Guys....

Lets go back a few years....the oil lamp on horse drawn coaches was in the drivers side, and who sat on the right of the coach

This was naturally so oncoming coaches passed each other right side to right side with greater vision, and hence the coaches tended to the left of the road or donkey track as available O0......

This is why we in civilized lands we drive on the LH side of the road today

Best we do not go further to why the folks in the great new lands of America decided to be different >>:-(.....and Contentional Europeans were probably too drunk to understand that the road had two directions

It is my understanding that "which side of the road" dates back to medieval codes of chivalry.

Knights in Britain rode with their lances over the right side of their horses heads, and their shield across the chest.
However in France the lance was general held across the horses head, to the left.

It was thus natural when another approached you moved to the side in which you could best protect yourself if they proved unfriendly.  It became convention that other road users were obliged to follow suit.
