I thought it stemmed even further back than that, from days of yore and knights and all that, you passed on the left as that left your sword arm free in the direction of the approaching person, Jousting was the opposite, where you passed to the right to keep your shield between yourself and your enemy.

 Tough on the left handed, probably natural selection is the reason most people are right handed

I believe I am correct in saying, that the Colonials on the other side of the pond drove on the left hand side of the road when the first motor cars came into existence.

Of course the indicator switch should be on the right. Customers in the antipodes should tell the manufactures to get stuffed and, if they refuse to change, you will only have to wait two or three years for vehicle's the correct configuration to start arriving on your shores once again.

the first motors were tiller steered so they had a choice and chose the wrong one,  {-) {-) %% %% %%
