HMS Belfast number 2

One of the new Type 26 Frigates is to be named HMS Belfast :-))

I thought that the HMS Belfast, moored in the Thames was, like the Victory, still a commissioned ship of the Royal Navy, Bowwave, or am I completely wrong.


just wondering as they are naming a new ship the same.

They have to build it first!

I took a Portsmouth Harbour tour yesterday which got reasonably close to the QE.

Belfast in London is now part of the Imperial War Museum. She is not a commissioned RN ship.

There are now two Queen Elizabeths, the carrier and the Cunard cruise ship.

If you do come down, let me know and we can look around together. I have an annual pass to the dockyard plus am a Friend of the Naval Museum.

Just over an hour's drive for me.

HMS Belfast is not commissioned, she is classed as a museum, so the use of Belfast is fine, she is to be known as HMS Belfast 1936 to distinguish.  Think we will have four nations names, got Scotland and NI, what next :)

The builders yard must have been a bit tight with the paint as she is rusting already, think I would ask for a warranty repair to her boot line and bow.  Wonder if there are other areas that need attention!

Judging by previous names used by the Navy for vessels like this I'm going to guess the following:


Carnarvon or Pembroke
Chatham or Weymouth


I'm going by the names of similar class of light cruisers from WW1 in the same or similar classes.

At least the Type 32 looks a bit better than the 45...or does it? I'm not sure...think I'll stick to 30's 40s ships,

Rust streaks in normal places, especially around hawse, she has been hammering around rough seas for a while :) :)

If we are talking of minor rust from the portside hawser on the QE, one essential element of her very first sea trials  would have been to prove the full functionality of her anchor systems

That would have been to deploy and embed an anchor in the seafloor ......have the anchor chain unblocked, then drive the vessel astern against the anchor...... the power of her engines would have created a pulling force against the embedded anchor sufficient to raise the design hydraulic relief valve setting or and to drag the anchor

Another element of the anchor system tests would have to haul in the anchor ....and to make fast against the hull hawser reinforcements....and again with full hauling power over the hydraulic system relief valves

This latter test could surely scrape or chip all points where the anchor flukes body impacted the hull to bare metal...so rust is just a part of sealife

Very true Derek, but I was more worried about how tin the boot topping covering has signs of wear and also the area below the boot topping.  Think the pain is a wee bit thin in this area.

Well, I've just had a closer look at my original image and there is no rust on the waterline at all. There is the black boot topping and underneath it red antifouling paint. Between the two there appears to be a thin white painted line. Along the junction between the black and red there is a growth of green algae which is normal for this area. The only rust is the stain coming down from the anchor stowage no doubt caused by rust on the anchor chain links following deployment of the anchor.

So now you know!

Thanks Colin, when I blow the photo up 15 times there was a distinct area above the water line (black) that then meets the green algae as you call it then the white line then the lower edge of the boot topping.   thats why I thought there may have been a wee short on the paint in this area.  But thanks for the information.
