seaplane tender 200 series 1932
« on: October 06, 2017, 09:58:15 am »

I posted on this topic earlier this year but I didn't get clear one question I had.
Is it just the roof construction that lifts off the cabin superstructure or does the Whole cabin lift out?
The drawing/plan doesnt make this quite clear for me.

I am about to start building this super boat from plan MAGM 2042.  Im not an especially experienced builder
but with the aid of a special blog on this Forum (Bluebird) I feel confident enough at least to get started.

Thanks
Nordlys.

I think my friend jim sent you photos of my build of her, but will reiterate that although I actually made grp moulds for both the hull and cabin from the originals that went to Guernsey, both the original and the grp boats were built to have the tops lifting off as one piece.
the whole cabin including the aft structure housing the windows comes off as one piece. the well deck has removable engine covers made from plasticard and split floor with a removable long beam to act as central support.

I built both those models on the stand for Guernsey St Johns Ambulance marine division. the ST200 was their first boat many years ago, sadly broke her moorings in a storm and wrecked within the harbour.

i'll send you  the photos again if you wish..

Neil, Many thanks, those posted photos are fine unless you have anything more detailed of the cabin structure being built -that would be a help.
I just need to get the procedure straight in order to get underway.

I don't have anything of the cabin being built but I built the rear section first, and then the front cockpit, both as the plans in model boats did, and then I just joined the two together with epoxy using clamps from the inside to hold them together. and then jst put combings around the deck to locate the wooden one and different ones for the grp one I moulded from the original wooden one.

I have picks of the boat with cabin off if you want............will take some tonight if you need them.

Neil, Yes please, if you get a chance - any bit of detail like that will be most useful.

Neil, I might as well ask you now - what type and size of motors did you use on the Guernsey model?
The plans I have talk about 2 Himax brushless but they seem to be almost vintage by now?

I used brushed motors, something like 585's but that was before I knew about brushless, which I am going to convert into sometime next year.....the brushed motors sapped amps to get her on the plane and lasted around 8 minutes.

Hi Dale,  I think I know why you ask that - didnt I read a short while back that you were looking to build one?
I may be a while in getting underway with the seaplane as Im attempting to get to grips with the plans.
Ive only built two models one was a RAF Pinnace the other a Fast Patrol Boat from an Aerokits box.
However, I do intend to record my progress with the build, it may be of some use to you - I hope so.

Hi Nordlys,
You are quite right but I'm at least a year or two away from starting mine, the plans are tucked away safely in a box somewhere as we've just moved house. Good luck with the build and I'm looking forward to following your progress on here.
Dale.

I think when you do a build blog you need to build up a a head of steam so to speak, so that you can make fairly regular postings,
problem being that with the onset of colder weather I tend to not work in my garage workshop for too long so there will be long gaps
in reporting!
Ive had this build in mind for sometime and I'm looking forward to getting stuck in  - first things first - the ply wood.

I built the Aerokits version of this model - twice %%  Firstly in the 1950s with my father, and more recently a replica using the plans and some templates taken from a kit. The first was powered by a small diesel and no RC. The second with a brushless and lipos.
In both cases only the roof of the main cabin was removable.

Thanks Barrie, concise and most helpful.
Very nice model too.
Would that be the longer version of the SeaplaneTender? ie 41" long.

if you don't fancy building hull and cabin, then steve tranter has my original moulds to produce replica mouldings or the boat, to ease the scratch builder. and the fittings are ALL available on open market............only bits to make are those others you see on the boat.

Could be - as I say it is based on a commercial kit from the 1950s. I built the second one for nostalgia but have since sold it. I sold it through a local auction house, but it appeared on ebay earlier this year %)

Hi Nordlys,

I did an article for Model Boats Mag about building a 200 series from scratch. Mine was a foam hull powered by a 28mm dia brushless 1000kv and it turned out to be a little cracker.
In the short article and photos I've shown how I did the cabin and separate well deck, all lift-off. Mine was based on the ST205 in Hendons RAF Museum. might help.

(See MB, July 2014)

Cheers...Ron Rees.
