You should be very proud of yourself as that is a fine hangar Jon  :-)) On displays, you could put a small mirror on the hangar floor to show off your roof  O0

Manufactured and fitted the bilge Keels and stabilisers today. The bilge keels is the one part of the model I hate making, the method I tend to use is to laminate 3 pieces of 2mm plasticard together and then file/sand to the desired tapper. It takes virtually all day in the workshop to produce these and I think my arm is going to fall off after all this filing  {:-{ . There has to be an easier way. Jon

Jon...the bilge keels look fine......do you reinforce them with glassed pegs or pins back into the hull?

In real life, these bilge keels are very important & literally the only things that keep the hull from rolling over  O0

Submarines are a slightly different kettle of fish & are ballasted by fixed placement of machinery, however 'could' roll uncontrollably without their fixed fwd & aft planes ...the rudder being fixed in the vertical plane also helps maintain balance O0

I think Derek is being rather overly dramatic in that statement! %)

Bilge keels help reduce the tendency for the ship to roll but will not stop the ship rolling over- many forces control the causes and effect of roll and the bilge keel is best described as an aerodynamic strake if it was on an aircraft. It can’t stop it rolling but smooths it out.

I’ve used different methods of making bilge keels but the best I’ve been shown was by Geoff Dixon who used angled brass.

Nick B is straight to a few issues.......

1. yes, naturally my words were a little tongue in cheek
2. however they were qualified by sea time on an [Oliver Perry Class] Australian FFG...........

Similar top heavy build as your British Type 42's.....our FFG's were never to be left in a mill pond and have a Force 8 Boom & Blow against a broadside {:-{

Our DDG's [Charles F Adams Class] were far friendlier and comfortable vessels at sea in similar conditions

The same physical limitations of stability apply in scale to our scale models

Any doubters?.......just get your like jackets  O0

Too true Derek
I sailed with HMS Edinburgh in 2012 for eight hours in Choiseul Sound in East Falkland and it was the most uncomfortable ship I’ve ever been aboard. I’ve been on a few ships but the Type 42 was like being very uncomfortablely drunk/tipsy all the time due to the movement of the destroyer.

Hello Derek, They are reinforced with 1mm brass rod that also goes into the hull, hopefully stopping me from knocking them off. Jon.

After completing the quarter deck I permanently fix down the Helideck and began detailing. Inserted the tie downs and made a start on the netting. Jon

Nice work Jon.
Our Type45 will not have inside detail as it is being built for distance challenges.
So it must be totally water tight.

Just on the question of stability. If the weights in a ship are too low the ship has a very high initial stability but a quick jerky roll. This is why many models look a bit toy like as they "bob about a bit". The corollary being if the weights are too high then the model it top heavy and can indeed roll over, but if the weights are just right you will get a slower roll, helped by the bilge keels to smooth things out.

This is not a question of detail because with a real ship if a ship is too stiff it bobs about and causes seasickness with a quick roll and it is difficult to aim weapons when you have a fast roll! A slower roll reduces crew fatigue and allows weapons to be aimed but has lower initial stability - its all a "balancing act!"

Cheers

Hello David, For the last couple of models I have used Humbrol Enamel paints. The best colour match and gives good coverage, the only real problem is that it only available in small tins. I tend to thin 50/50 with enamel thinners and spray with an airbrush. I expect I will do the same on this model. Jon

Hi Jon , I used humbrol on the fleet tender I have just
Done  I went with the the light grey 147
The norm seams to be 127   , not shore if
This is to dark on a small model and they only
Do it in satin , I think the lighter Matt 147
Would show small detail better
I will have to do some experimenting
