Clearcoat help
« on: October 13, 2017, 10:15:01 pm »

Hi, I'm wondering if someone can help me
I've painted my hull in Halfords red oxside primer for the bottom but hand painted the upper hull with Humbrol enamel paint is there a clearcoat I can use over both of these surfaces? I tried on some test pieces with some allow wheel lacquer I had but that blooms/crazes the paint hence the test piece  :} can someone advise what I could buy to go over both of these surfaces?
I'm thinking 49 Enamel Varnish Matt - 150ml Spray Varnish might do the job but didn't want to buy a load only to find it doesn't

that's what the alloy wheel lacquer was Acrylic and it crazed, I wonder if it's a differant make up as it's alloy wheel paint rather than being body paint?  {:-{
think a quick trip to halfords tomorrow morning and have a look  :-))

Thank you Bill I think I might try the Humbrol 49 matt clear spray as I know that is ok with there enamel paint, I've got some samples of painted wood to try it on before I actually try it on the boat

Hi, I always thought the rule of thumb was enamel is OK on top of acrylic but not vice versa.
Or is that not the case now with the choice of paints available  {:-{

I did read that somewhere but then I've read lots of things and completely confused myself with the differant paint mixes  %% so most of the time with me it's trial and error, but I did read that humbrol clear was ok with their range of enamel paints and also compatible with most Automotive paint so hoping it's ok with the red oxide primer

Acrylic over enamel...nope!
Enamel over Acrylic yes ok..

My rule for painting...use the same system... keep to the same manufacturer.

Just my 10 bob's worth... :-))
