WOW! An offer I can't turn down.
« on: October 27, 2017, 09:26:44 am »

My current build of the Stril Barents is going slowly but making progress. I actually about this time last year posted some photos of it to a European model site and through that I was contacted by a member of the crew for updates etc.

Now this contact has over the months since then supplied me with information and photos whenever I have become stuck over something.

So two days ago I was stumped over a part of the build I am up to, the photos were not very clear so I sent off an email. Yesterday Kurt my contact and who is the 1st Officer of the ship sent me back not only the information I needed but also an invite!

I have been invited to go up to Hammerfest on the northern tip of Norway and to take a trip out aboard the Stril Barents to the Goliat exploration field in the Barents Sea :}

My one concern over accepting especially at this time of year is I could end up with my head down the nearest toilet for the entire trip {-) The Barents Sea in winter is not the most inviting place to be.

So my wife is pushing me to do it because it means she gets a trip to Norway,  although what shopping she could do there and not here confounds me. I'm not sure what to do at the moment, I just might put it off until next year, maybe even take the finished model with me.

You’re right, that’s an offer you shouldn’t turn down.....how lucky are you!

Norway is lovely, went there earlier this year. If your good lady wants to go shopping make sure you're packing some money, we thought it was quite pricey!

Likely a once in a lifetime opportunity. The wife can stay ashore if she likes.
Try motion sickness pills a day or two before, then during the trip if necessary.

But go...

Well that was a shortlived  travel experience!

Alicante to Haugesund in Norway with Ryanair 3hrs 40mins, € 570 return air fare. Then Haugesund to Hammerfest via internal Air Norway 4hrs 10mins just under €1000 :o :o or 29 hours by car %% I hadn't realised Norway was such a long country :D There is no way I can justify such a huge sum of cash on a personal jaunt and certainly not doubling it to take swimbo. That is almost the amount for our 2 week holiday next year!

Fantastic opportunity, and it sounds like SWMBO is on board already.  :-)) Some thoughts that might be helpful, or maybe not %) . Does the ship or the shipping company sail further south than Hammerfest? How does Kurt's company move personnel around the country? The company might have their own cheaper channels, or even a company rate with Air Norway.
Does the company want to use your model build, and your visit as a PR opportunity? If they do then some of their resources may be open to you. They probably would not pay for the flights, but some other costs may be offset.

Pain though it is I think you will find it cheaper to go via the UK
Alicante to London cheap
Skyscanner came up with London to Hammerfest in November £500

Just a thought

I never thought of using skyscanner Kev,  just used what turned up when I checked the route. I'll need to have a proper search for flights, as said, I might get something cheaper than hopping via the UK. Its just the logistics to get there when the ship is in port and working out the returns when it gets back, hey ho, something to work on!
