Koh-i-noor re-build
« on: October 31, 2017, 09:47:09 pm »

hi I'm new here...

I'm trying to fix the steel rails to the pushpit and pullpit on my Koh-i-noor so they don't keep detatching without creating a massive ball of metal. Also would like them to look like stainless steel not dark silver. Any ideas on paint?

Then also my hull has gone yellow. Transfers are yellowed as well. Ideas welcome on that...!!!

Has anyone any tips?

My soldering wasn't very successful I couldn't get a strong bond...

Make the rails in Brass, then get them plated, ie nickel, chrome or zinc. nemesis

thank you for the advice.

here are 3 photos hopefully showing the problem a bit better.

i think the original rails were brass but I can't be sure.

I wonder, do all ROBBE Koh-i-noor yacht hulls and superstructures turn yellow after 25 years, or am I just unlucky with mine?

Could be UV degradation, happens to a lot of plastics, nemesis

It is possible that the rails were originally nickel/chrome plated. If you can get them cleaned replated. Check online for nickel/chrome plating in your area. Maybe someone is willing to do a small job on the side. I know it is an investment in time, but for very small jobs like this, it is sometimes better to turn up at the workshop in person and chat to the owner.

As for the discoloration, yep, sounds very much like UV degradation; especially seeing that there is little discoloration under the decals. There are chemicals for refinishing some plastics, it might be worth testing on a small area.

Sometimes its just the surface that has discoloured and a mildly abrasive polish will restore the surface (like T-Cut on car paint).  More usually, with white plastic, the UK has given a deep suntan, the only cures there are either a paint job or a new one.
Not much hope for the decals - making new ones or sourcing them for use after the paint job are the options.  I doubt that Robbe would be able to help following their collapse a couple of years ago.
