My Camera
« on: November 27, 2017, 01:17:02 pm »

Hello,

Leaving School I served an Apprentice Ship as an Engineer.
Years later, a Firm I was working for was waiting for a big order to arrive, we were all standing about with nothing to do !!.
I asked the Foreman if I could make something for myself - - he said yes, if anybody asked what I was doing, he would say I was making Jigs!!.
The camera is known as a Monorail and is "Tripod Only", uses 2 ¼” x 3 ¼” roll film, with a Schneider lens and shutter.

Alloy was used to keep the weight down, but it is still quite heavy!.
A full range of movements of the front, and rear panels, are available to enable corrections of the photograph being taken.
The ball joint and Tripod were also made at same time.

The Bellows was a bought item, my versions worked, but did not look too good !.
When the camera was finished, I made lots of money taking photos of machines for Trade magazines and the Works draughtsmen for future reference.

John.

Hello,

Did not make the bellows that are on the Camera, I found out how to make them, but the one that I made did not look too good !!!.
So, I bought a proper one - - kept mine, in case of an accident !!.
The camera is now a part of History, it could be fitted with  electronics to replace the Film it used, but it is now a treasured keepsake.

Still have mine as well together with various lenses and 5x4 backs and, the black but red lined velvet sheet; but I've not used it for many years.

I often think about resurrecting the Mamiya Press and going back to basic's with the Western light meter, does the World of good in my view.

It is interesting to see that film camera's have never really died out and that new models are in the pipe line. I also noticed that a couple of the winning images in the 2017 "Landscape Photographer of the Year" competition were shot on Hasselblad's.

What a lovely piece of kit. Unfortunately I am born into the era of digital photography and so film photography is largely witchcraft to me (although of course I understand the way the camera works etc), but I absolutely respect people who shoot film, and it does produce some truly cracking shots. So to do so on a camera you have built yourself must be very special and great fun.

Working in a dockyard I know all about things made in spare time, you truly would not believe the 'rabbits' I've seen born, nurtured into adulthood then smuggled out through the gates!
