Amphibious models
« on: September 04, 2007, 10:04:01 pm »

I was very interested in a recent post about a DUKW build (very nice) as it brought back memories of my Army service in that I drove an amphibious vehicle.
The vehicle in question was a Stalwart. Richard and Colin gave me a couple of good links which eventually led me to this -

Wow, I want one!!  I think it would be fabulous but as a "first scale model" - hmmmmm?

What do you 'experienced' guys think?  Too much for a first?  The one he's made is 1/8th scale but I would prefer 1/6th (if I could do it).

GO FOR IT!!!!

when I built my first model from scratch the advice I was give was
1) take my time
2) break everything into basic shapes
3) Dont panic if you make a mistake
4) if you are unsure ask for help

the best
make the awkward bits out of card first so you
can alter the shape until you get it right then transfer
on to the actual building material

my first scale model was a 1/72nd scale Type 23
talk about jumping in with 2 feet

I to liked the look of this model about 15yrs ago, got the plan from Radio modellers Plan service Rm 264 ,  size complete is 24" (656mm), not as good as the one on your link but could be probably made into a nice model.

... reminds me very much on his German equivalent, the amphibious tank "Fuchs" (Fox).

Quite a few years ago , I was going to build one of these. I wanted it to be build like the original IE  two axle steer, full suspension ,  six wheel drive , working diffs , and work on the water. My problem was and still is LOM ( lack of money  ) !And having the tapering narrow lower hull makes it difficult to shoehorn what I had into the hull. I still have plans to do it in the future tho .
keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks Mark, I'll bear you in mind (if ever it gets started!)
I got the plans and drawings from Bovington Tank Museum.
Has your cousin got his own fuel depot then?  {-)

No fuel depot i'm afraid but it is scary when you go to the forecourt so most of the time he transports it around on the back of a lorry as its cheaper. Plus the stolly is not designed for road use and the drive axles "wind up" when it is driven on the road and every 2 or 3 miles you have to take it off road and nail it to get all the axles and drive hubs back in line otherwise you would break the transmission. Not practical but a lot of fun, especially when you reverse it, as reverse is engaged via a transfer box so the Stolly will go just as fast backwards as is does forwards.
