Vic Smeed plans for a 36"restricted class yacht "Krispie"
« on: June 02, 2006, 07:07:15 pm »

Got this double sided plan along with plans for a trawler and as i've no desire to build a yacht they're free to the first person that gets in touch. Mail me a house address and they're yours.

I'm going into hospital on Tuesday for an operation on my ankle so i'll try and get it sent on Monday to who-ever wants it.

That's the almost original 36R model made of Cornflakes boxes and gummed paper!!!!
I'd been looking out for plans.

And the news just gets better. I was told a few days ago, that the greatest modeller who ever lived, Vic Smeed, has just done a new small yacht plan for Model Boats. Should be appearing in the next few issues. I can't wait.

yipes! he's still going strong?? I also built a small power boat of his. I think it was called Xqqme or something to sound like "excuse me". I've still got the ED diesel that powered it.

Would anybody happen to know what the original keel fin length is? It looks as if the paper size might not have let the full depth be drawn. It's shown as about 12 cms from the bottom of the hull to the ballast bulb centre line.

Hi Martin,

I think you will find that it is correct as drawn.
The 36" Restricted Class always had a short keel to comply with the rules.

It had to fit inside a box 36" x 12" x another measurement I cant remember.

The idea was that if you reduced the beam, then you could increase the keel depth, because the boat could be tipped on its side more. If you had a wide beem, then the boat had to fit vertically into the box etc etc etc.

Regards Bob

Slightly out there BobF, the size of the box a 36" design had to fit into was 36" x 11" x 9"", though as you say, the model could be tipped slightly if the beam was less than 9". It's a long time since I sailed one, and the class must be pretty much defunct these days, but they could be quite tricky, as sail area was unrestricted and some people used to put massive rigs on them in light conditions. The only other rule I can remember was that there was a displacement limit of 12lbs. We'll have to stick with these Imperial measurements, as I don't recall the class rules ever being metricated.

This is beginning to sound like two builds. It would be a shame not to use the plans to build as designed in the first place; wooden spars shallow draft and all. However 6 sq. inches of rudder, half of which is a fixed skeg, must be a throwback to the days of vane steering and a longer fin would allow the 7 lb bulb to be slimmed down a bit and then there are carbon spars and mast. Well, it'll keep me busy in the winter. The 16" x 60" mainsail looks more than enough for either set up, though.
