Anyone Seen the New Wheeler Dealers?
« on: December 23, 2017, 07:05:44 am »

So I sat and binge-watched the new series of Wheeler Dealers online. (search for Wheeler Dealers Cosworth Escort – some sites are blocked for UK viewers, most are ok)

I understand that the franchise was sold to a US company - and in the search for higher profits, lots of the brilliant but expensive filming of ‘hands-on’ mechanical work was to be ditched and more cheap ‘banter’ was to be included (as seems to be the fashion of all the US car shows) This caused Edd to wash his hands of it and there’s a load of Youtube interviews with Mike claiming he’s been ‘stabbed in the back’ by his old partner.

The new guy (Ant Anstead) seems to be a very capable engineer and he tackles some complex jobs but I just can’t warm to him. His delivery is too soft and doesn’t have any variation or impact with his voice.
Also, the old Wheeler Dealers was criticised for not always selling the cars and having members of the production team pretend to ‘buy’ the cars on camera – but the new show’s ‘buyers’ and ‘sellers’ seem to be even more totally improbable.

Be interesting to hear other people’s views.

It starts on Discovery over here on January 1st.

I used to watch and enjoy the show for Ed's presentations, not Mike's crappy false banter. Without Ed it's no-show for me, without seeing a single episode.

Yes it was Ed that made the show for me, that Mike just tried to make out that he was doing all the work buying and selling but to me he just came over as a total plonker.

totally agree - luckily, watching on-line means you can skip the first 15 mins of Mike's BS and go straight to the interesting nuts-n-bolts bit with Edd.

The last 15 mins of joyriding and fake buyers can be skipped too.

Removing the ad-breaks means you can do a complete episode in under 25 mins.

The Escort Cosworth episode has to be seen to be believed. They stick a terrible, badly fitted extra spoiler on the back and sell it for $20,000 more!

Yeah, riiiiight.  %)

Used to really like watching the old programmes with Mike and Edd. A record is set for the new series with Ant.

Favourite programmes/restorations :-
Morgan (Chassis swop)
Mini Moke
Beach Buggy
Amphicar - best of the lot, a superb restoration

Anyone else have a choice of favourites?

Yes ,they have taken a pretty good program if you ignor Mike Brewer, and turned into a load of   Something you do not want to tread in.  My thoughts anyway. :-))

Definitely the Amphicar.

I liked the Amphicar restoration - loads of rust repairs - but I have a thing for Jensen Interceptors. Always my favourite.

But as another thought - what cars could they do next? Something where it can be bought & restored for a profit? There's not many left that haven't already been done.

I'm thinking a Berkeley. Rare & odd.

Or has the series come to a natural end?

I agree with all that's said here. I've seen Ant on other programmes and I can't warm to him either, he has little TV charisma and somehow looks forced, Edd was natural in front of the camera. Hated Mike's section  of the programme and hated even more the reprise after the breaks. let's be honest the Yanks do not know how to make decent TV.

I liked the amphicar as well but I also enjoyed watching the restoration of the Citreon HV van.

I always skip any programme with a BMW or Merc in it they have been covered too much.

I would have loved to see them restore a MKII Ford Consul, my first car.

Will I watch the new series - Dunno!!!!!!!!!!

Why was it always OK for Brewer to make an offer when buying the car, but he would get upset when someone did the same to him when he came to supposedly sell the car {:-{

Used to watch it on Quest on Virgin Media, now find it is on Discovery and Discovery has disappeared off Virgin Media although I have the Full House package.
Sounds like it will not be no great miss now without Edd.

because he's a car trader by "profession".........if you can call it that.............and what car trader EVER likes giving money off when he wants to make the absolute most on a deal........simple fact of motor trading.

If any one tried to knock me down on price like Brewer , I'd tell him too . . . . off , it's all a pantomime , these cars are carefully researched & the seller's probably getting MORE for the little acting  session . Curiously I've been scanning the reg' on the vehicles they've 'done' on the DVLA website, at least a 1/3rd of them haven't been on the road / MOT'd since 2015 , I know their old programmes , but the tax record is current . . . .makes you wonder . . .

For me the big thing is that they crow about making 500 or a few grand on the restoration but no labour costs are ever included in the figures. Even if a modest return was made on Edd's labour , say 60 hours at £50 (after all any business has overheads) they would have to sell the restored cars well above the prices they say they do.  On the financial side the show never did stack up but enjoyed watching the engineering.

Yeah - I think the cars are fully inspected by engineers before Mike gets to see them and the price is pre-arranged with the seller - maybe plus a few hundred to include his acting appearance fee. I've also checked the MOT status of a lot of the cars and most have been off the road for years after MOT failure with loads of faults (some of which were obvious in the program like severe corrosion).

I think the Amphicar program was contrived - a few years ago, Disney Springs in Florida were buying a load of Amphicars for taking punters around the lakes so they accidentally created massive world demand for these POS cars. The prices sky-rocketed and so restoring them became profitable. Disney now has all the cars & spares they need to run their operation so I'd guess the price bubble has burst and selling one now would be very difficult.

You'll be telling me next that all of the auction and antique finding shows are scripted and pre-arranged and not spontaneous.  What next? Fixed wrestling?
